The 13th Zodiac Sign: Ophiuchus

Whether or not you believe that the position and relationship of the sun, moon, stars, and planets has any bearing on your personality, you probably still know what your astrological sign is.

The zodiac contains twelve constellations and is divided into twelve equal segments. Each astrological sign represents one of the segments. The signs are Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces.

These are signs that we’re all familiar with, even if we don’t know what each represents. For example, are you caring but moody? An astrologer might peg you to be a Cancer.

But it’s likely that you’ve never heard of Ophiuchus.

The name of this large constellation means “serpent-bearer” in Greek. The ancient astronomer Ptolemy included Ophiuchus in his list of 48 constellations. (It used to be referred to as Serpentarius, which has the same meaning.) It is still one of the 88 modern constellations.

Standard astrological zodiacs do not include Ophiuchus.

However, a few astrologers who use a sidereal zodiac do consider it to be the 13th zodiacal sign.  Simply put, the system of tropical astrology, the standard astrology, is tied to Earth’s orientation to the solar system. Whereas, sidereal astrology relates to Earth’s orientation to the galaxy.

And what personality traits might be linked to Ophiuchus? Give us your best guess.

Hi. I am a ophiuchus Um I was born 11dec. Always thought I was a sagg but was more in tune with scorp. Iv ad out of body experiences. I also ad a vision of the end of this world as we know it. I also walked on the beach of heaven with the man Jesus who I now know as the Saviour of the world. Ppl can laugh all they want. I know the truth wat apnd to me & iv also seen demons including melted witches faces & evn a demon in my sister! I also saw a giant snake in the sky. Ever since I was littl I culd see spirits. Um im an Australian Aborigine so I jus thawt it was all part of my culture but none of my ppl experience these things. I also seen the spirit of a nun wen I was 7yrs old & she beckoned me to come to her with her hand but I wuldnt I was too fritened. So with all this I av to set the record straight right ere now! We are spirit beings living inside a physical body. Simple as that!!!!!

Perhaps I am wrong, but I didn’t see it mentioned anywhere that symbol that represents Ophiuchus is used by the Medical profession. It is the symbol known as Cadeusceus… and used by the ancient Egyptians… It has wings on the top of a sword and two snakes entwined around the sword. And as for the astrology matching up with the 12 calendar months.. originally there were only 10 months, so they added in January from Janus (the two- faced roman god) one looking back and the other looking forward. Fitting for the first month of the year.
February, was named forfebrua meaning month of purification and offerings.
March was named after the Roman god of war Mars.
September, the Romans introduced the Julian calendar, they retained several month names from their old Roman calendar, despite the fact that these months no longer had the same position on the calendar. Thus, September, once the Roman seventh month of the year, deriving from the Latin septem, ” seven”, remained as the ninth month of the year.
QPB Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase Origins By Robert Hendrickson
October – Latin, the ninth month of the primitive Roman calendar, which began in March, fr. octo eight: cf.F. Octobre.
    1. The tenth month of the year, containing thirty-one days.
    2. Ale or cider made in that month.
The country gentlemen had a posset or drink they called October.
    –Emerson.
    Webster’s Revised Unabridged Dictionary (1913)
    November
The Ninth moth. The ancient Romans calculated the begining of their year in March. Hence they named the ninth month novembris or november. November and Novembris were derivatives of latin novem “nine.”
Source: Dictionary of Word Origins by John Ayto
    December.
This month is named after the Roman word Deca meaning 10. In the original Roman calendar there were only 10 months.
..And there are Good and Bad traits in every star sign.. I guess ultimately it is up to the individual if they choose to believe in it or not.

ok, for one just cause its a snake bearing zodiac, does not mean we act in a snake like fashion, think outside the box. For years cultures use snakes for various meditation, some have used them for hunting, they use there scales a make camouflage, and so much more… what if it is not another zodiac sign,,, but maybe its a sign Maybe the snake is just that, a reminder of times ahead,,, its not for one person, or just a group, it is for everyone to see. To remind us that these times of sorrow and death, war, hunger. The snake tells us to use its, cunning, and steadiness, agility. the right to gain purpose, and life, no fear of anything that may come forth, the will to live is strong,,, it is up to you to apply it

The Ophiuchus sign a man holding a snake signifys to me one who is the bairer of healimg knowlage , and a man struggling with the snake is one who is struggling with their own self knowlage. This person wants to offer good knowlage. But does not always know the best way to go about it. This person may also become fustated with the way people approach their problems in life. They may come off as a know it all ,any they’d may offend the people they are trying to help. Good intentioned. Hlepful. Tactful. Pateint.Gatful tward teachers for their help, but they may will still try to formulate their own opinion. The person make for a good parent.

I do know that there is much more than your Sun sign. There are planets, aspects, and transits, nodes to consider, progressions but I definitely feel this is true. Another thing, the axis has shifted gradually over time, so why would everything else stay in place. If the position of the axis changed then everything else should change accordingly. One does not become exempt just because you want it too. Sometimes having an open mind will bring you further along.

Since Ophiuchus is located between Scorpio and Sagittarius, the traits would most likely be a combination of the two. Maybe a deep a thinker like the Scorpio but perhaps more fun-loving? Or maybe a bit happy-go-lucky like a Sagittarius but perhaps more cautious?

That makes sense. My birthday is November 28, but they say if you’re on the cusp then you receive traits from both signs, or if your sign is located around the last degree of a particular house, interpretation would be for the next house. I feel in this situation the above is definitely me. :) I vicariously like to weed out all the evil, (snake barrier) and I do it as if it’s no problem. I have been that way all my life, never afraid of confrontation, especially if the cause is justified (very Sagittarius) I’m very sensitive but that’s probably b/c of my moon in Pisces, but despite, since this sign lands in between the two, I do believe he/she would be highly intuitive and spiritual as I am. Since I am witty, yet very resourceful, and a great researcher as I can never put anything knowledgeable down. I never get any sleep b/c all I do is research. It’s insane….something struck me and told me to start digging again and I ended up on this topic. I’ve heard of people talking about this, but always thought I was above the conversation, it wasn’t until later that I realized this must be researched. And I really do believe that that is the case and that my bf is really a Virgo.

I am also charming, magnetic and have a great sense of humor. :) Wow, that sounds like I’m bragging, but honestly it fits.

    * You wouldn’t want to know the negative sides, haha!
And my ex’s friend used to call me a snake…? LoL!

Hey, my birthday is November 28th as well. And I’m kinda upset because trait-wise, I am more an Ophiuchus/Serpentarius. I’m definitely not a Scorpio. I suppose the 28th is on the cusp, but not the right one for me. I think I should be Serpentarius on the cusp of Sagittarius. I am a Healer, a massage therapist, a writer, a poet, a musician, and a philosopher. I make jewelry, bodycare products, herbal remedies and do crafts. I seek Wisdom avidly (as well as Understanding). While I thought myself to be a Sagittarius, only the trait of Philosopher seemed to stick. Some of the other traits were there, but they weren’t UP THERE in my opinion. Whereas the list of traits for Serpentarius actually SPOKE to me. Don’t destroy my dreams, by not allowing me into being a Serpentarius, because I’m ONE day off. (Some of my dry humor! I think maybe I need to complain to an astrologer! ;).

Hi I was also born on 28th November, I always thought I was a sag until I found out the I’m a scorpio. It’s too good to be true because I am exactly like a scorpio but in all these years never read what their personality traits are like. that fact I’m born on the cusp of Ophiuchus and I am currently going through a saturn return in scorpio (sidereal astrology) I have seriously considered a career change to go back to school to study medicine, which is something that Ophiuchus represents.

Goofy people. You’re forgetting that we(most of us) are all born on Earth. That is WHY we are born under these twelve signs. The Earth too was born at some point in time at some point in the universe. Under its OWN zodiac. The final zodiac is like the final gear in a transmission- it drives all the other gears. It is like a “mother” zodiac as the other twelve are born from it. Dont forget the Earth has thoughts, feelings, AND a physical body just as we do. It lives.

From the The Elder Scrolls (Morrowind and Oblivion games):

“The Serpent wanders about in the sky and has no Season, though its motions are predictable to a degree. No characteristics are common to all who are born under the sign of the Serpent. Those born under this sign are the most blessed and the most cursed.”

Also interresting to note, is that the Celtic zodiac has 13 signs, or animal totems:

    Stag/Deer (Dec.24-Jan.20) – Capricorn (The Goat-And-Shark)
Cat (Jan.21-Feb.17) – Aquarius (The Waterbearer)
    Adder/Snake (Feb.18-Mar.17) – Piches (The Fishes)
    Fox/Vixen (Mar.18-Apr.14) – Aries (The Ram)
    Cow/Bull (Apr.15-May12) – Taurus (The Bull)
Seahorse (May13-Jun9) – Gemini (The Twins)
Wren (Jun.10-Jul.7) – Cancer (The Crab)
Horse (Jul.8-Aug.4) – Leo (The Lion)
    Fish/Salmon (Aug.5-Sep.1) – Virgo
Swan (Sep.2-Sep.29) – Libra (The Scales of Balance)
    Butterfly (Sep.30-Oct.27)
    Wolf/Hound (Oct.28-Nov.24) – Scorpio (The Scorpion)
    Falcon/Hawk (Nov.25-Dec.23) – Saggitarius (The Centaur)

If you search for self-knowledge by only looking at the Sun, you will see only a part of the mystery that is you. Don’t forget the Moon and Ascendant. The Sun is your outer self, as the world sees you; the Moon is your inner self, as you know yourself; and the Ascendant is how you put yourself forth, in actions and deeds.

We can go on to say that it is almost equally vital to know your Mars and Venus signs. Mars is how you move and speak; Venus, how you love and take IN life.
Searching Saturn, you will know what you need to work on in this life; and in knowing Chiron, you could understand your special weakness, and help yourself overcome it.
You will find facinating things by discovering yourself in the other planets aswell: Jupiter, planet of Luck; Pluto, planet of Transformations; Neptune, Uranus, Mercury planet of the Mind, and Eros (your sexual side).

(Note: In astrology even a mere asteroide is termed a ‘Planet’, I suppose, for simplicity)

Ok so i was a little off. when i said that we have 12 planets in our solar system, i didnt mean we have 12 planets. we only have 6. but there are 12 symbolized home planets used for the signs. They are the all the planets (besides earth), ths sun , the moon, and pluto. I thought earth was used in place of the sun but i was wrong. However, the sign Ophiuchus still cant be a zodiac sign. If each of the 12 home planets is used once, and The sun already taken by leo, Ophiuchus still has no element. If added, it would still make the Perfect 12 a imperfect 13.

  25. Harris -  January 14, 2011 - 7:56 am

Ophiuchus, although a astrological sign, is NOT a zodiac sign. As it would be the 13th sign, it was discarded because of its relationship to the number 13. Also, 12 is a perfect, round number that is divisible by 4 AND 3. this means it can divide into the 4 elements(fire, earth, water, and air) and the 3 qualities(mutable, fixed and cardinal.) although some say it is under the fire element and the ruling planet is the sun, i can not agree with this. In mythology, fire is rarely linked to healing, the trait of Ophiuchus. Also, the sun is not a planet, it is a star. We only have 12 planets in our solar system as pluto is no longer a planet. Since a Constelation must have a ruling planet to be a zodiac sign, Ophiuchus is not a zodiac sign. Its pretty to look at though :)

Serpent-bearer…Hmmm. One who carries a snake carries the mark of a snake. To carry one without incurring death from its bite means you have an immunity to its venom. Thus, you may be one who meddles in affairs most would deem too dangerous to do so. You may need cunning, courage and a sly tongue to search your way through your snares, and you may have developed a camoflauge of sorts in society so as to hide your true nature. Being a serpent-bearer means you also must be above serpents themselves, so you can go good or bad, and you know how serpentine personalities work and may use them at your advantage or disperse them.

People born under Ophiuchus are extremely curious souls, also extremely jealous at times, rebellious, a sexual magnet, very open to change. I am a Ophiuchus and proud of it! If Ophiuchus doesn’t exist, well then I fall under no sign. Sagittarius fits me to the least, and I was born on the 15th of December. I refuse to say that this “lost sign” doesn’t exist, to the fact that I fit perfectly under Ophiuchus (aka Serpentarius). Also Pisces and the Serpent Holder are soul mates.

It doesn’t make much sense to me that there should be a 13th zodiac sign. The 12 signs correspond to the 12 months of the lunar calendar. If a zodiac sign is added, shortening the length of all the signs, it would completely mess up the way they correspond to the lunar months. There is no 13th month, except on leap years, as Mo Cheeks pointed out. The month corresponding to Pisces, being the last month on the lunar calendar, is repeated. It works fine that way; having a special month for leap years is too much.

(An added benefit to the repetition of the last lunar month is that anyone born then can celebrate his birthday thrice – once on the standard solar calendar and twice on the lunar calendar.)

    Concerning pronunciation:

According to my Encarta dictionary, it’s pronounced o-fee-OO-kəss. The first o is like the o in pot. The double o is like in pool. And just in case the last vowel doesn’t show up – it’s a schwa.

I like to believe the majority of us Gemini aren’t so blind to the fact that real astrologers use plenty of math and intellect (so wouldn’t you think they’d be smart enough by now to RECALCULATE according to the planets positions?). It takes a real metaphysical numbness and blindness to miss something as obvious as the aforementioned.
Honestly, in my opinion, he sounds more like the overly logical Aquarius…

i noticed one posting about the correlation between 2012 and this constellation. the reason behind this, should anyone care, is because ophiuchus lies from our line of sight directly in front of the center of our galaxy. the big deal (or not so big deal if you are not a doomsayer) about 2012 is that on december 22 2012 the earth and the sun and the center of the galaxy will be in perfect alignment. or in other words you will be able to draw a straight line from the earth, through the sun, and straight into ophiuchus, onward through to the center of the galaxy. the mayans were very adept astronomers and recognized this convergence as a very rare and significant event. end of the world though? i sincerely doubt it.

    Heh.

In the seventh grade, I wrote a story with the title ‘Ophioukhos.’ It was about a boy who lived on an island, the sole sentient inhabitant other than an ancient, reclusive serpent. The boy spent the entirety of the story trying to coerce the recalcitrant snake into biting him (in order to circumnavigate the stigma he self-ascribed to suicide).
Early one morning, a rescue ship appeared on the horizon. The serpent realized then that he was afraid of being alone, and had acted selfishly by refusing to kill the boy. So, of course, he crept into the boy’s tent in the wee hours of the dawn to deliver the boy to a merciful death.

All very banal and jejune in retrospect, but I remember being quite pleased with myself at the time.

Ophiuchus is not included in standard astrological zodiacs, which divide the ecliptic into abstract 30-degree segments (implying exactly 12 signs) rather than using the physical constellations. However, a few astrologers using a sidereal zodiac use it as the 13th zodiacal sign.

The traits of someone who is an Ophiuchus, would obviously have snake-like qualities. For example, I think they would be seductive and thoroughly convincing, like the serpent who tricked Eve into eating the apple. They would also be very clever, sharp, quick to anger and quick to strike-out, but defensive due to fear of others. Tamable through patience.

    2. Is it related to the serpentine galaxy-edge-view that crosses the ecliptic at a steep angle?

We should have more explanation of this….

    3. Ptah created the ‘zodiac’ for his own first-lineage family to keep track of millennial time: ‘Predestination’ is only for Ptah’s first-lineage, not the general public…which is why it’s sometimes called ‘occult’ etc….

Astrology is superstitious rubbish. It would literally be more accurate to appraise a human’s personality based on what the person ate for breakfast. ‘Hmm, well you wear red shoes and white socks. Of course, yes, of course. You have difficulty with authority and commiting to romantic relationships.’

I tend to agree with Courtney,as a snakelike pesonality and as you are asking us to guess, you could consider the fact that the number 13 is considered unlucky i.e. no 13th floor,etc.. But astrology is not based on religion–catholicism, jewisim, muslimism. Nobody has posted anything I can actually disagree with ( you asked us to guess), but I tend to go with the snake is the serpent, that was made to slither on its’ belly the rest of its’ days and breathe dirt and dust. Perhaps the Hindu religion equates the snake with something good but I can’t recall the snake representing good in any spiritual gendre. So I look upon this 13th zodiacal sign as something not good. Why do astrologers (most) leave it out? Is it because it is the number 13, which (perhaps factual) superstition has ingrained(forming a part of the essence or inmost being) in us to avoid?

it’s interesting. There are 13 signs on the Mayan and Aztec calenders. The snake is a symbol of death, betrayal, doom, etc. According the Egyptians, the snake stands for Aphosis, embodiment of chaos. In Greek mythology, the snake was a symbol of doom: drakons, hydras, dracanae, etc. The leap year day (Feb. 29) is the only day of the Ophiuchus. Ophiuchus(Ὀφιοῦχος- greek) is the serpent bearer.

    serpent-BEARER, not serpent itself, guys.
THE serpent bearer was the first healer:
“November 30 – December 17 ~ Ophiuchus is the 13th sign of the zodiac. Unlike the other 12 signs is actually associated with a real person. In the 27th Century BCE in Ancient Egypt lived a man known as Imhotep. Imhotep was known as ‘Aesclepius’ by the Ancient Greeks, however the attributes are the same under either name.

One of Imhoteps abilities was healing and it is said that it was he who introduced it to mankind. His accomplishments also included a wide knowledge of medicine. The serpent or snake symbol which is still used today to symbolize the medical profession was also used to represent Imhotep.”

The zodiac (horoscope) shows the location of the Sun against the constellations that we call zodiacal. The zodiacal constellations are the ones that the Sun passes through in a year’s time. Thirteen such modern constellations are placed along the visible path of the Sun. Astrologers predict personal traits according to the positions TWO THOUSAND YEARS AGO. In the meantime the constellations moved ahead one month. So,for ex. Pisces is not Pisces anymore. Astrologists, on the other hand, did not “move ahead”. So, their analysis are mare phantasm, “a load of insanities”…

The traits of Ophiuchus have been absorbed over the years into the modern English word “officious”.You will find Ophiuchusii mostly working at governmental offices, especially regulatory and tax collection agencies, and the courts where their traits may shine.

Like their reptilian zodiac mascot, they find positions in our society where they lie in wait to victimize, poison and strangle the next victim. You will find them usually in dens together where they attack their victims (happy and productive people of the other twelve signs)either individually or by swarming. They are incapable of reason or morals. Only force and threat are used to communicate. In instances where they do sound reasonable, it is only for the purpose of putting a potential victim at ease.

This sign is also incapable of creating or producing anything of value to society and survive by extraction of life and energy from victims which they organize in to groups for this purpose, creating long lines of bored and agitated victims.

It is appropriate that they are 13th sign of the zodiac, since they are just plain bad luck all around.

An Ophiuchus is one that makes movies about esoteric ignominious Hollywood people like Lindsey Lohan, Downey Jr, and Lady Ga-Ga. They all belong to the 13th astro symbol, “snakey-joe” and design tattos for the living dead like Andy Rooney on 60 minutes and Dave Leterman. Ophiuchus…probably pronounced like “oh-fee-oo-choos” (that’s just an educated guess concerning how it would be pronounced in Latin). Ophiuchus is technically under the domain of Sagittarius, seeing that if one were an Ophiuchus, one would have been born between November 29 and December 18th. So you could consider yourself either a Sagittarius or Serpentarius.
i suppose one would have personality traits relating to that of Asclepius, the original serpent-bearer (??)

To me, it looks like astrologers generally associate a person born under a particular sign with that animal or other being’s personified traits. For example someone born under the Taurus sign would probably be associated with physical strength or tenacity by an astrologer. This leads me to hypothesize that someone born under the Ophiuchus sign would possess personified serpentine qualities. For example, said person could be linked with conniving and traitorous qualities. However, one must always bear in mind that what I set before you is mere conjecture. Also, the fact of whether or not one believes in astrology is an entirely different matter altogether. I do not want to invite disorder to the post through potential arguments, so let it suffice to say that I do not believe astrology, I simply find the topic interesting.

As you asked for “Give us your best guess” about personality traits might be linked to Ophiuchus?

    MY GUESS ANSWER

As it’s said as the 13th zodiacal sign, Ophiuchus carries the numerical value for 13. From your above statement “Standard astrological zodiacs do not include Ophiuchus”, my guess work is to include it in my counting system by adding the numerical value of 12 and 13.

    Where 12 represents “Standard astrological zodiacs” and 13 is for Ophiuchus;

    12 + 13 = 25; therefore, 2 + 5 = 7.

    POSITIVE TRAITS FOR 7

Skilled at analysis and research, an intelligent seeker of knowledge, scientific and inventive, studious, meditating, charming personality and demeanor, love of solitude and peace, a perfectionist.

    NEGATIVE TRAITS FOR 7

Hidden motives and suspicions, overly reserved, arguments enjoined with silence or sarcasm, isolated, inflexible positions, overly upset by distractions.

I live in Greece and we heard about Ophiuchus several years ago. Some astrologers even included predictions for it in their predictions, but now it has been largely abandoned. Just because it is a constellation, doesn’t mean it is a sign as well. It coincides with part of Scorpio and, if you consider it a sign, it leaves Scorpio half. If it were to be a sign, it should be equal to all other 12 signs.

Well I’m expert on astrology, load of insanity that it is. However I think maybe sneaky or devious, caring, wise? Easily skinned for accesories? Okay that last one was a joke.

Any guesses on pronunciation? Regardless, I love the topic. Is there any more information on the subject?

I would say very smart, quiet, quick thinking, and very cool and collected, but sometimes striking out…. Stands up for oneself…. Physically, very strong…. Probably comes between Scorpio (who sometimes has the energy of the gray lizard) and Sagittarius, who loves to travel and move…. A very spiritual one….

An individual holding a snake, especially in an ancient context, of course suggests healing, especially of the ‘alternative’ type, or its opposite. In a more modern context it suggests those who interact on a broader level with the environment, positively or negatively, and its increasingly endangered species. Is it not synchronicitous that this represents the ‘blind spot,’ even in the relatively alternative field of astrology, the forgotten constellation?

In which interval would a person have to be born, to fall under the influence of this sign?

So does Ophiuchus link up with a certain time period, then, in this sidereal zodiac?
