11/11/11: Why is today so rare and unusual?

11/11/11 is a much-anticipated day. Obviously, it contains all of the same digits (like 1/1/1, 2/2/2 and so on…), and it is a palindromic date. (That means the numbers are the same backwards and forwards). 11 is a very odd number and has been subject to much interpretation over the ages. According to Yahoo! News, medieval scholars believed that while most numbers had positive and negative qualities, the number 11 represented pure evil. Find out what “eleven” literally means here.

Numerologists also think there is something special about the number 11. In numerology, 11 is a master number. Most numbers reduce; for example, 11 would reduce to two by adding the digits, but 11 is considered to be “higher” version of two. 11 is “highly charged” and “difficult to handle” according to numerologists who believe integrating your internal number is important to self-revelation. To them, 11 represents illumination and sensitivity.

Eleven is a unique number in other ways, too. Many people profess to see the time 11:11 on clocks more than other specific minutes, and certain outlying groups have suggested that this represents the 1,111 spirits that are protecting us. Prominent psychic Uri Geller has connected the number 11 to tragic world events, including when JFK’s assassination, the attacks on the World Trade Center, and many others. Other people have asked whether it is just a coincidence that bankruptcy is called “Chapter 11.” Psychologists call this a post-hoc analysis, which is when people assign significance to something that is just a random occurrence after the fact. Read about other odd 11/11 coincidences here.

Last year an uncanny number of birds seemed to be falling out of the sky simultaneously. This confluence of events sparked the public imagination and prompted us to introduce a wonderfully useful word for trying to grapple with coincidences: “pareidolia.” Find out what it means exactly and what it says about the anxiety that seemingly synchronistic experiences can create here.

On this century’s 11/11/11, the public is responding in all sorts of contradictory ways. Many betrothed couples are picking 11/11/11 as their wedding day, swamping churches and wedding venues with festivities. A director of the horror film series Saw is producing a film aptly titled 11/11/11. And in a more amusing direction, the Corduroy Appreciation Club has dubbed 11/11/11 the “day that most resembles corduroy.”

Computer programmers would also like to remind you that today is the last binary day of the century. What does that mean? It is the last day that can be expressed in the binary code of zeros and ones. The next binary day will be January 1, 2100.

Are you doing anything special for 11/11/11? What do you think of these theories?

TAKE THE LONG WAY ROUTES: Officials urge using freeways, not side streets, to get past 405 Freeway closure

Daily News (Los Angeles, CA) July 13, 2011 If transit officials have any advice for motorists over the “Carmageddon” weekend it is this: Go long!

Southern California motorists, who prize clever shortcuts over side streets and along canyon roads, should temporarily downshift to staid freeway travel from Friday night through Monday morning. this web site 405 freeway closure

Officials say motorists may have to travel longer distances, but in the end will reach their destination sooner. This will be especially true for San Fernando Valley drivers trying to get over the hill and others trying to get into the Valley from the Los Angeles basin.

“It’s a longer distance, but it’ll be a lot shorter in time travel than getting off the freeway and getting on those side streets,” said Chris Rider, spokesman for the Los Angeles Department of Transportation. “It’s going to be far less frustrating for people than when they’re in traffic that doesn’t move.” With the San Diego (405) Freeway to be closed for 53 hours between the Ventura (101) and Santa Monica (10) freeways, those trying to get to the Harbor Area or LAX will find their traditional route blocked.

They are being urged instead to take the 101 to the Harbor (110) or 10 Freeway, or the Ronald Reagan (118) Freeway to the Golden State (5) Freeway to the Long Beach (710) Freeway.

Those trying to get to the Westside can take the 101 or Foothill (210) Freeway to the 10 Freeway.

For example, someone trying to get from Sherman Oaks to Westwood – normally a 17-minute trip, sans traffic – is advised to detour around the mess by taking the 101 south through the Cahuenga Pass, transitioning to the 110 south, then the 10 west.

The detour could double the traveling time, but it should still be quicker than being stuck on crowded side streets, officials said.

For motorists trying to get out of the West Valley, Metro officials suggest taking Topanga Canyon Boulevard to Pacific Coast Highway.

But the DOT has shied away from advising people to use canyon roads – such as Topanga Canyon, Las Virgenes, Decker Canyon and Kanan roads – to avoid creating traffic jams in residential neighborhoods.

However, in preparation for the crush expected on PCH, Caltrans has removed K-rails from the southbound stretch between Temescal Canyon Road and Chautauqua Boulevard to open up that side of the road to two lanes. The K-rails were in place for a runoff diversion project.

PCH will be opened up to three lanes until Tuesday morning.

Other winding and narrow north-to-south connectors such as Beverly Glen Boulevard, Benedict Canyon Drive, Coldwater Canyon Drive, Laurel Canyon Boulevard and Cahuenga Boulevard also could be jammed.

Some Valley residents say they’ll be heading in the opposite direction to avoid the chaos. “I’m going to go north, since the south will be closed. I’ll use the 101 north and probably go to Ventura County or Ojai,” said Marcy Cohen, 59, of Reseda. “I usually go south toward Santa Monica or Manhattan Beach, but this weekend I’m going to go north because I don’t want to hassle with traffic.” Motorists who must brave the streets during the weekend are encouraged to dial 511 to check traffic conditions. go to website 405 freeway closure

“I usually use Sepulveda if there’s a lot of traffic, but this weekend I’m going to avoid traffic by staying at home,” said Mona Kaddoura, 21, of Northridge.

The 405 closure between the 10 and 101 freeways is expected to begin gradually from about 7 p.m. Friday as workers begin demolishing the Mulholland Drive Bridge overpass to widen the carpool lane. The freeway is expected to be reopened by 6 a.m. Monday, with contractors facing stiff financial penalties for missing that deadline.

cj.lin@dailynews.com 818-713-3738 PARK AT YOUR OWN RISK The following surface streets will be limited to through traffic and parking will be prohibited during Carmageddon, with parked vehicles being cited and impounded beginning at 12:01 a.m. Saturday:

South side of Ventura Boulevard between Balboa Boulevard and Sherman Oaks Avenue.

North side of Ventura Boulevard between Noble Avenue and Sepulveda Boulevard.

Both sides of Sepulveda Boulevard between Greenleaf Street and Valley Vista Boulevard.

West side of Sepulveda Boulevard between Valley Vista Boulevard and the 405 Freeway.

East side of Sepulveda Boulevard between Moraga Drive and Ovada Place.

Public transit options Public transit agencies are beefing up service this weekend to offer Angelenos an alternative to traveling around the Southland.

Metrolink will add service on the Antelope Valley Line and also will operate the Ventura County Line, which typically doesn’t run on the weekend.

Amtrak will offer half-price fares this weekend to passengers traveling between Union Station and Bob Hope Airport in Burbank.

Metro will add 61 buses and 32 rail cars during the weekend closure, and also will offer free rides on the Red Line subway and on 26 bus lines.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is offering a host of alternatives, with details available at www.metro.net/projects/I- 405.

First off I would like to say great blog! I had a quick question that I’d like to ask if you do not mind. I was curious to know how you center yourself and clear your mind before writing. I’ve
had a hard time clearing my thoughts in getting my ideas out there.
I truly do take pleasure in writing however it just seems like the first 10 to 15
minutes are lost just trying to figure out
how to begin. Any suggestions or tips? Many thanks!

11/11 is Remembrance day in the UK. It is the day we remember all those who died for us in WW1, it was the official end of the war. We wear a poppy and have a nationwide minute silence at 11o’clock on the 11th day of the 11th month.

Something else thats creepy about 11

    The tragedy occurred on the date 9/11. 9 + 1 + 1 = 11.
    September 11 was the 254th day of the year. 2 + 5 + 4 = 11.
The airplane that hit the north tower was Flight 11.
    That flight had 92 people on board. 9 + 2 = 11.
The airplane that hit the south tower had 65 passengers. 6 + 5 = 11.
The Twin Towers resembled the number 11.
In English the expression “New York City” has 11 letters.

I think it’s only piling up some coincidences and events so that it gives
a kind of unique conclusion. sometimes you feel that things and events are ordered in a way you can’t give an interpretation to them. moreover, you feel that they refer to something. Also, sometimes the events happen haphazardly. So, paying much attention to this is no more than having fun and reading some useless information.

You can write every other date of the coming century in binary notation just as well. And 11/11/11 does not look the same in binary notation as it does in decimal. I do not unserstand what the author meant by that paragraph.

the Prominent psychic Uri Geller could also bend spoons with his mind, up until he appeared on the Jonny carson show in the early seventies. Johnny carson was a magician as well as a talk show host. Under just that much more rigorous scrutiny Uri Geller couldn’t bend a spoon there, and hasn’t bent a spoon since. The rest of the article is equally as factual.

Any notion conceivable can be corroborated by someone else claiming it. This is far from sufficient grounds to posit it as probable

The source must be qualified to confirm it.

Maybe NASA never landed on the moon. Maybe the sun won’t come up tomorrow.
Ideas that lack compelling reason to assert them as probable, are equally lacking compelling reason. since anything is possible it’s irrelevant to distinguish the possible from the possible.
Once a concept is substantiated to a degree greater than the ambient mush of involuntary thought or the merely possible, it acquires a relevant status by virtue of no longer being just merely possible.

Belief means an emotional preference for one possibility over all other equally possible notions. it’s emotional taste. Not a physical or scientific condition.

Make up a fantastical nursery rhyme and write it down. Does the thinking it or writing it give it any validity? Pass that nursery rhyme around the world and you could have tens or hundreds or thousands who might see fit to start a cult based on it. They don’t know you just made it up and wrote it down. But we know It’s still just a fantastical nursery rhyme.

that’s the point. we know even though some would assert otherwise. .so cut the crap. Your a dictionary. not a depository of mystical swiil

Tell us facts we didn’t know. Not of a possibility, no more possible than any other.
It’s like comparing imaginary objects for their distinctions. There aren’t any. They don’t exist.

It would seem that we notice the numbers that are important in some way. If people see 11:11 a lot, they probably notice that because they think it is an important number.
Just my two cents. Maybe I’m crazy, but I just thought I’d throw that in.

Ohhh, so #11 is evil, eh! Who would have thought that a pair of innocent and rickety-pickety stick-like characters could have hidden menacing features, as noted in the wonderful article on 11!
Well now, how do you know I too saw that the 11/11/11 is to be a palindrome when I wrote to my Facebook friends a written piece, yesterday, 11.11.11 unlike yours 11/11/11. Could be pretty sure that there must be a theory in this fashion of writing though it doesn’t look that much of palindrome! for some reason, perhaps.
Yes, 11 is a #, the highest natural and positive one, that cannot be broken down in some form but by itself and one. But 11 is evil… can’t imagine or picture that; it is a #, a brainchild of mortals can be evil. Puzzling. However, “11 represents illumination and sensitivity,” is learned and it’s good, as 11 like any # just there awaits us for our use. To me it is venerable and therefore should be respected. Then again there lies the beauty of mortal brain: the creator, the preserver and the destroyer, of course.
The binary features of any #, let alone 11, are fuzzy, hazy, or nebulous to me, I have to know, learn and understand this unique relation between # and computer.

Wow. There are so many factual things you could have discussed about eleven — why eleven and twelve have unique names unlike the other “teens,” the origin of the names we have for dates and how those patterns make the pattern 11/11/11, how this date is the same in European or American formats and why those formats differ, why the eleventh month is “November” (which means “Ninth Month”, just like Sept=7, Oct=8, and Dec=10), and what it means to turn the volume up to eleven.

So many factual, interesting things. And you talk about numerology, psychics, and conspiracy theories. Way to spread knowledge, Dictionary.com!

What about the strange fact that next year will be the last of the so-called lucky days? 12/12/2012 is the last because there is no 13th month. Could this be why 13 is an unlucky – for some – number?

there’s no specialty in 11-11-11 as it is basically 11-11-2011. if this 11-11-2011 is special than 11-11-1111 was tooooooooooooooooo much special in history. do we remember that 11-11-1111 ?? do we remember any event of that day??? it’s “no” . so we will also forget 11-11-2011.

Maybe, this is eerie to think about, I sometimes get vibes, and deshavue (sorry about the spelling) and this just kinda creeps me out…

once i had deshavue that i was at the haulacost museum and i had never been there until later that week when i went there on a trip for school, and that the same day, a week later there was a shooting at the museum it made me wonder what would have happened if my classmates and i were there on the day of the shooting…

and about a month ago my dog was diagnosed with caner of the lymthnods, but about a week earlier, before the diagnose, i had a vibe about cancer and my dog, but i thought nothing of it at the time now i feel bad about it…

Also, for a while now i have been getting vibes but i can’t figure out about what.

oh and about the vibe thing a lot of people in my family have had vibes that turned out to be true.

I remember when it was 06/06/06 and a lot of people who believed in God said it was sainten’s day and some people said don’t go outside cause it was like the mark of the beast day.

But to me it’s just a day who cares about what day it is ya know and look next year will be 12/12/12 and they say this happens over a handred years to happen again.

See above, in the article, “pareidolia”, the assignment, by some people, of order and/or significance, where none exists. It’s only important to people who think it’s important. Sadly, like too many other things in life, far too many people.

I lived through 1961. Like 1881,1691 and 1001, it’s the same if you invert it. There’s a word for that, but I don’t remember it after fifty years. Maybe Dictionary.com can dig it up.

Just went to a wedding today. At 11am. I agree with Clark Dark, though, that 11-02-2011 is the true palindrome regarding the year 2011; we’re not in the year 11 right now.

Also, 11:11 doesn’t stick out on a clock to me like it this article says it does for many people. I more often catch 12:48 on the clock than anything else. But maybe that’s because, like OLH064, I see things more from a programming perspective.

Interesting article, but the bit about the birds could use a better tie-in if kept in the article. It _really_ seems out of place.

11= third 6 days that god was already finished with the creation

12 12 12 will be the year of Stonehenge. We will celebrate in the cold, dancing naked–just for fun if nothing else. I’ll be there. Wearing a Bunny suit (I don’t like cold). I am OK with changing the venue to the Golden Gate Bridge or Ephesus et al. but I am still wearing my Bunny suit.
Keep in mind that their are no months thirteen+ so its our last chance for redemption.

11:11 the most common minute by coincidence of staring at the clock? Nonsense. I bump into the clock at 9:37 more than any other time. The radio position of the station I listed to most often in my childhood was 93.7. I would like to believe that if anything, the number 937 has a thing for me.

The first numerical palindrome date of 2011 was actually January 10th, 2011:

    1102011

Most people missed it…don’t worry, there will be one similar to that each year this decade and in the 2020′s (2021 – 2029) and a few in the 2030′s (2031, 2033 – 2039).

Numbers are cool, but they don’t really have any mystical powers. God is in control.

11/11/11 marks the time for a new beginning, rebirth, another start, rearranging or orginizing, different path. It’s the day of 315. Some strange and unexplained things are going to start taking place from here on in. I don’t know what events are going take place, just sit and observe the earth and the our solar system. The key relationship between all of these factors is TIME.

1 = first, beginning or level. Word=God. What are words and numbers? They are related to one another. Every letter both printed and written are lines and circles. When 1 is connected it then becomes a 0. Circle represents infinity. Never-ending. Note that our numbers start with a line and at the end when brought together are a circle. Infinity. What and who is infinite? GOD. His communication with us is a great mystery. 11/11/11 is really 11/11/2011.
Now what. Time is infinite. Words and letters. There are meanings and reason in both
Both are found in His Word. Seek and find. Knock( desire to enter) the DOOR will open.

This is communication These thoughts may not be new to some but may be a light to others.
