Is she a “lady”? Is she “gaga”? Did Lady Gaga choose her name because of what it literally means?

Her catchy tunes, epic videos, and bizarre outfits have made her the queen of pop — at least for now. Adding to her allure is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta’s strange, yet fitting, stage name. What does “Lady Gaga” mean? And why did Ms. Germanotta choose it?

To start, a lady is technically a “woman whose manners and sensibilities befit her for high rank in society.” The ancestor of lady is the Old English hlæfdige, “wife of a lord,” or”one who kneads bread.” It seems clear that the only kind of bread Gaga is making is the type one keeps in a bank vault.

(Are you sure you know what the “Mad” in “Mad Men” stands for? It isn’t “crazy.” Click here for the answer.)

Gaga” is used most frequently to mean “excessively and foolishly enthusiastic.” For example, “Lady Gaga’s fans are gaga over her plastic bubble dress.” The English usage is probably derived from the French version of gaga, which means “senile, foolish.” Although the literal meaning is relevant to the dotty performer, this is not why Lady Gaga picked her name.

(While we’re talking about celebrity name enigmas, what does the “A” in “A-Team” stand for? Here you go.)

Early in her career, the singer chose the moniker because of the Queen song “Radio Ga Ga,” which was released in 1984. Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury is apparently one of Lady Gaga’s heroes.

(There is some debate, however, about this story. It has been reported that the name actually came out of a marketing meeting.)

“Radio Ga Ga” was a commentary on television taking the place of the radio, as is expressed in these lyrics:

All we hear is Radio ga ga

Radio goo goo

Radio ga ga

All we hear is Radio ga ga

Radio blah blah

Radio what’s new?

Radio, someone still loves you!

Interestingly, the song was originally going to be named “Radio Ca Ca,” something that the drummer’s young son had apparently once said. Caca, of course, is slang for defecation.

Very good attempt at trying to understand the hidden meaning behind her name. You are on the right track but unless you are within certain circles you cannot learn the whole truth.

The ‘story’ of it being taken from a Queen song though necessary it is not the truth. It is merely that a ‘Story’. Her name has far greater significance attached to it than the general populace could ever hope to know.

In order to fully dissect and have knowledge regarding this name you must first, as you have done here know the title ‘Lady”. Which does not simply stop at the definition of

…“woman whose manners and sensibilities befit her for high rank in society.”….or….“wife of a lord,”…in some cases it can mean or take on the meaning of “Lord” as it has in Gaga’s case. In fact her title stretches way beyond that.

Secondly you must apply an ancient system to decipher the hidden meaning behind the name itself. A name which can be written in two forms.

Gaga = which is the single form

or it can be written as

GaGa = which is the plural form.

If you learn all there is to know about the name you will learn all there is about the Lady herself. The name explains everything she does and says.

Including the meaning behind her lyrics.

So, if Queen had stuck with the original name of the song, the radio would be flooded with songs by “Lady Caca?” That’s an amusing idea, and somewhat fitting!

I don’t necessarily like Lady Gaga, but I am truly sick and tire of all the judgment! All the bible references seem completely irrelevant and I will throw up if one more person says ‘pity Queen didn’t keep Radio Caca, it would have been more fitting.” Everyone thinks they’re so funny saying that, but by the 6th time, it JUST ISN’T FUNNY. If you don’t like Lady Gaga, what are you doing looking at the blog about her? If you have nothing to do, go look up the word imbecilic.

Everybody, if you would just read all the comments before you post, it would be easy to tell that the name “Lady Gaga” came from both a marketing meeting AND Radio Ga Ga. Her producer was trying to tell her something about Radio Ga Ga via email, text, etc. when it corrected it as Lady Gaga. He was in a marketing meeting when he sent the message, verifying both stories. I’m still not sure if she knows what the meaning is, but it certaintly fits. Many fans are “gaga” over her, while others just think that she is silly, senile, or foolish with her choices. (For example, her clothes) Either way, I think Lady Gaga deserves a high rank in society just for having the courage to stray so far from the normal.

Gaga…….uh caca is a VERY evil influence on our youth! What God created as sacred, sex between a husband and wife, she has turned into evil! Woe to her! Woe to much of our corrupt culture! Stay true to Jesus, and continue influencing those younger (and older) than you for God! Be bold, be strong, for the Lord thy God is with thee! :)

Whether you don’t think you are or not. Lady Gaga stands for every crazy person who wishes they could free themselves from the shackles of shame. She is the light for everyone who is insecure of themselves. She helps everyone feel loved by being the mother monster she is. She is not a religion. She is a shining enigma that no one can understand. She is expressive, she is beautiful, she is Lady Gaga.

Well to all you “LADY GAGA” lovers out there does it really matter what here name is? I mean i think it only matters if she is saved and knows our lord JESUS CHRIST!!! But by the way she dresses and talks i don’t think so. Now i’m not judgein because it’s not my place to judge it’s God and GOD only who can judge us.Like it says in the Bible For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil: But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharpas a twoedged sword.(Proverbs 5:3&4) But honestly i don’t think how she dresses and the way she acts is good for our kids these days. Me on the ot6her hand have no kids for i am still in high school, but think of the little kids. Like with Miley/Hannah on disney channal. The other day my five year old cuz came up to me and said amy since miley is a star does that mean she can do whatever she wants? I didn’t know what to say. but i did the best i could by telling Ashton i’m sure she gets to do a alot by herself but she still listens to her parents. Ashton just looked at me and said but how come she makes millions and should nbe able to do whatever she wants no matter what her parents tell her to do. I was shocked! So i just told her what it said in the Bible Even a child is known by his doings, wheather his work be pure, and wheather it be right.(Proverbs 20:11) But with that being said she still didn’t understand why miley can wear short shorts and dance like that and dress up like a bird. She wanted to do that and i knew right then my aunt and uncle would have problems with her if she kept watching and looking up to these girls! Thank God she doesn’t like her that much any more and is all about icarley now but i worry that before long she will be all about LADY GAGA and other people like that. I’m not judgein lady gaga about anything i’m just worried about our youth.

The article was very objective, and does exactly what a dictionary.com article should do…goes into the literal meaning of a pop culture star and compares it to the truth according to that star.

I’m personally indifferent to Lady Gaga’s music, but think she’s a very interesting character. She is definitely worthy of a high rank in society just for being able to be herself.

Thanks for the un-biased article! It gives neat information for one to think on.

TWO POINTS OF THIS STORY ARE INCORRECT!!! The gaga had never really listened to Queen other than a few hits. The song was played for her by her then manager and boyfriend Rob Fusari. He even came up with her name by accident. They both agree on this. From an interview with the two of them…

“Radio Ga Ga is one of Fusari’s favorites from Queen. “Every day, when Stef came to the studio, instead of saying hello, I would start singing ‘Radio Ga Ga,’ ” Fusari explains. “That was her entrance song.” Stefani was in the midst of brainstorming a stage moniker, when she received a text from Fusari that read “Lady Gaga.” “It was actually a glitch,” says Fusari. “I typed ‘Radio Ga Ga’ in a text and it did an autocorrect so somehow ‘Radio’ got changed to ‘Lady.’ She texted me back, ‘That’s it.’ After that day, she was Lady Gaga. She’s like. ‘Don’t ever call me Stefani again.’?

Lady Gaga herself has explained this already. It is indeed because of the Queen song. I have never heard of a story about a marketing meeting, but since she has never said anything about this, it is probably not the reason behind her name. However, it may still be somewhat relevant. Perhaps that was the first time she introduced herself as “Lady Gaga” at a professional event. Anyway, this was a good article. Every time I go on Dictionary.com I always end up reading these. Keep up the good work!

I only wish the name rolled off the tongue more gracefully.

Great post! I love the high linkage, but footnotes with full citations (such as the Radio CaCa story) would be even cooler.

    Thanks for a fun read!

Almost right. she got the name because her producer was trying to write ‘radio gaga’ in a text to her and mistakenly sent her the typo ‘Lady Gaga’. That is the truth..

Why a photo of various bob wigs? Sure, the star, the Queen of Pop (according to you, Hot Word) should be featured as the blog post’s photo!

And sorry, but I didn’t intend to offend anyone in any way. Just raising a point, but after all the negative points that I’ve raised, I would wish to see an improvement in the content of your blog posts, Hot Word.
