What do the words “Barack” and “Obama” literally mean?

We recently asked readers to suggest a name for us to research and write about. The name that received the most requests happens to belong to Barack Obama.

The 44th President of the United States is named after his father, who was a Kenyan economist. Barack is an African name meaning “blessed.” It is a form of both the Hebrew name Baruch and the Arabic name Mubarak, which also mean “blessed” and relate to the Arabic barakah. Another common spelling of the name is Barak.

There is no connection between Barack and “barrack,” which has both a different spelling and pronunciation. A barrack is a building or group of buildings that lodge soldiers. It comes from the French barraque and the Spanish barraca, which means “cabin or hut.”

Obama is an ancient Kenyan surname. The name is found frequently among the Luo, the third largest ethnic group in Kenya. It is believed that the name derived from the root word obam, which means “to lean or bend.”

Obama’s middle name Hussein is the first name of his paternal grandfather. The name, which is of Arabic origin, means “good” or “handsome one.”

Now, what do some of the most common last names in the United States, like Smith, mean? Find out here.

Here’s another chance to suggest names which you would like us to write about. Once again, the name with the most requests will be a blog topic in the near future.

Wake up people. After another crime attached to an islamist supporter obama has once more refused to tell it like it is. This islamist apologizer is indeed telling all by what he doesn’t say. The same as Hilary Clinton. This man will play a major roll in the war against Israel.

He is trying to weaken a once all christian nation America so it is to dumb and incapacitated to act. He needs America to be divided. A divided kingdom will fall.

He now wants to ban guns at the wrong time in American history. Why now? He doesn’t want christians to defend themselves at the time of upcoming perseceution. He is already apponting liberal judges to poison society.

Jesus is not a religion. Jesus is the truth. Obama is the spearhead of a false religion. He is the father of lies.

Let me correct you.Your beloved Trump is a liar, a cheat, the destroyer of the world. He is Satan himself. Just look at him add horns and a goatee he looks like the dark one. Everything he stands for is evil. PRESIDENT OBAMA is none of that. He is a true christian. He is a kind and peaceful man. And he will prevail against all things with the help of the Father, the Son and the holy spirit.

Barrack Hussein Obama has TWO Islamic Names! Barack is the name of the horse Muhammed rode up into the heavens. Wikiapedia—” the notably Buraq carried the Islamic prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Jerusalem and back during the Isra and Mi’raj or “Night Journey”,[1] as recounted in hadith literature.” So Barrack has been a regular islamic name for along time. HUSSEIN is one of the 99 Names of God –The Quran refers to the names of God as God’s “most beautiful Names” (al-ʾasmāʾ al-ḥusná). Hussein —This name was not used in the pre-Islamic period,[3] and is recorded to have been first used by the Islamic prophet Muhammad when he named his grandson Husayn ibn Ali, saying he had been commanded to do so by the archangel Gabriel.[3]

Cocored, Obama has really pulled the wool over your eyes! You obviously are unable to discern the spirits of good and evil. Several years ago when he spoke at Georgetown U., why did he want all the crosses and references to Jesus Christ covered up? Is that characteristic of a true Christian? I don’t think so! Trump is not a politician and he is definitely not the Devil!

        • Ang60 -  July 25, 2016 - 6:19 pm

Obama has had the US at war for longer than any other POTUS in history. Quite an accomplishment for your “kind and peaceful man” wouldn’t you say?

        • Lucero -  August 19, 2016 - 4:41 pm

I absolutely agree… Besides ignorant people can’t realize that the war is about politics, not religion; which by the way is a freedom in America.

        • Melissa -  September 8, 2016 - 11:24 am

Trump is an actor to get people to except the new world order, when the one world leader aka Obama comes and says that it is the best thing for society you will believe it and accept it.They all want power and control. They also want to hide what’s going on so they use a person like Trump to distract you.And about Obama being a Christian,he has mocked the Bible, just look it up.He also stated that “the future doesn’t belong to those who slander the prophet Muhammad”.Do your research and ask God to open your eyes spiritual
          Good luck!

“Trump shall become My trumpet to the American people, for he possesses qualities that are even hard to find in My people these days. Trump does not fear man nor will he allow deception and lies to go unnoticed. I am going to use him to expose darkness and perversion in America like never before, but you must understand that he is like a bull in a china closet. Many will want to throw him away because he will disturb their sense of peace and tranquility, but you must listen through the bantering to discover the truth that I will speak through him. I will use the wealth that I have given him to expose and launch investigations searching for the truth. Just as I raised up Cyrus to fulfill My purposes and plans, so have I raised up Trump to fulfill my purposes and plans prior to the 2016 election. You must listen to the trumpet very closely for he will sound the alarm and many will be blessed because of his compassion and mercy. Though many see the outward pride and arrogance, I have given him the tender heart of a father that wants to lend a helping hand to the poor and the needy, to the foreigner and the stranger.”

Check out what the bible says, Hebrews 11:32, about the name Barak (variation of Barack), it isn’t good! And I don’t think anyone would name their children after a man in the Bible who is against God, unless they are also rebellious against God. I know of no other group of people who are more rebellious against the God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob, and the Christian Lord Jesus Christ, than the Muslims. They hate everything God stands for, and they are told that they will receive many virgins if they die fighting for Islam. What I want to know is “How do any number of virgins benefit dead men?” Their religion makes no sense whatever.

          • Paul Cagle -  July 19, 2016 - 7:45 pm

32 And what more shall I say? Time will not allow me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and the prophets, 33 who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and obtained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions, 34 quenched the raging fire, and escaped the edge of the sword; who gained strength from weakness, became mighty in battle, and put foreign armies to flight. Hebrews 11:32-34. I am not a fan of Obama, but you just lied about scripture. That chapter is about the superstars of the Christian faith. I am calling you out publicly because you lied publicly.

Religious zealots like Muslims and Christians. Both regions embrace hypocrisy. Judge not lest ye be juged. The one rule Christian hypocrites seem to always forget.

    • Sharon -  June 15, 2016 - 4:53 pm

Do you mean Barry Sotero? I have never researched it, but I think Sotero is an African name. Barry has many names. Who knows which is correct…if any of them! I personally have my own name for him, which I think is a lot more accurate than anything Barry has come up with so far. How many people do you know who has that many different last names? It’s bizarre! WHO is Barry/Barack Sotero/Obama, etc.? He has something to hide.

  4. Alex -  February 12, 2016 - 8:05 am

Actually, both sides are correct. Barack has two meanings: Blessed OR Lightning. The Lawless one will come as Lightning falling from heaven (just as Christ described Satan falling from heaven) followed by our Lord’s (who is blessed) return. (who will descend with a shout of the arch-angel).

      • Sharon -  June 15, 2016 - 5:36 pm

Donald isn’t Christ, nor is he the Anti-Christ. He is a man who sees our society and our laws being destroyed and wants to correct the wrongs which are running rampant now! Take a good look around! Look at all of the violence which has developed since Obama (or whatever his name is) has been in office!! It is nothing but hatred against your neighbors! In the past we might not have liked our neighbors, but we believed in live and let live, unless they were criminals, and in such case they would be reported to the police. We felt safe going out of the house to go to movies or other LEGAL entertainment. That is what is called a civilized society. Today, we can’t leave our homes without worrying about being shot by some nasty mean, out of their mind moron. It is all being contrived to make us afraid and to eventually overtake our country. The Arabs want to make it like they live. Oh joy! I can’t wait to live in a trash ball society where there is no safety or peace!

        • Don Rose -  July 15, 2016 - 6:42 am

          Sharon, you’re so right!

    • Wayne -  May 13, 2016 - 8:11 am

Sigh, yet more American ignorance and monolinguism. In Semitic languages – Arabic, Hebrew, Aramaic, etc. – there is a distinct difference between QAAF and KAF which closest analogues are Q and K in English. For example, kalb means dog while qalb means heart in Arabic. In another example, a common greeting in Arabic countries is Allah YuBaRaK Fiik, or God Bless you, not YuBaraQ or God will strike you with lightning.

Barack does not mean BOTH blessed and lightning, it is a derivative of blessing with the KAF sound. Arabs, and by extension, Muslims DO NOT name their children lightning.

      Keep you ignorance to yourself.

Amen to that! The one falling from heaven is Satan himself! He has been thrown out of heaven and will be on the Earth. The bible tells people to beware of him and how to recognize him. He is not an ugly figure with burned red skin and horns, the bible says he was the most beautiful of God’s angels. That’s why Satan and his devises are so easy to fall for. Satan can make the most vile thing to appear to be a greatly desired thing. (Think: Adam and Eve eating the forbidden fruit. Satan said, “you will not surely die” when God had told them explicitly that they would!) My belief is that those who believe in the death, burial and resurrection of Christ for their salvation will not have to worry about what Satan will do, because they will be in Heaven with God, not on Earth with the unsaved.

      • P D F -  July 22, 2016 - 8:12 am

Thank you for the teachings as they are meant for this world to believe that the truth is right in front of them.

    • Sharon -  June 15, 2016 - 5:22 pm

Barry is already on the Earth, so what does the Lawless one falling from heaven have to do with Obama? In the Bible, the lawless one falling from heaven is none other than Satan himself and the people who are still on earth are warned about him, Rev. 12:12. I think Barry is a dangerous man, but only because he has torn down our society and way of life in America. Some people are totally out of control, and he is trying to remove the ability to protect themselves from the rest of the American population! He is satanic.

The signs are all around us. If you cannot see them maybe you need to reevaluate your own salvation and get right with the Lord.

its true Barack means blessed.Anne truth stop being that hateful

    • Anne Truth -  January 21, 2016 - 1:44 am

Some of my comment may have been unnecessary but that is what the name means. It is a Hebrew name derived from the name Barak who was a warrior in biblical times (Judges) He was called by God to deliver his people through a woman named Deborah. Barak hesitated and told Deborah he wouldn’t go unless she came along. Although he listened to God he only did so because Deborah came with, because of this she told Barak he would not receive credit for the victory. Barak brought 10,000 soldiers and did defeat the enemy of Gods people. The Hebrew definition of his name is lightning and “in vain”.

P.S. Barack the president has completely disregarded Gods law with his recent legislation. In my opinion, especially with rumors of his colorful background K believe lightning and vanity is a good fit. Sorry.

      • Cliff -  February 11, 2016 - 7:24 am

A lot of the evangelicals that hold themselves righteous are like a dung hill to God. They oppress the poor and the fatherless, withhold justice from the widow. God has a special judgement for them.

      • Herbert English -  March 24, 2016 - 1:57 pm

In all my many decades on this earth.I have never seen a more decent humble, loving, kindhearted ,gentle ,Godly man then President Barack H Obama .
I don’t know where you have acquired this hate for such a godly man ,unless Satan himself has infused this into you..Repent today and ask God to forgive you. Then do what scripture tells you to do.PRAY FOR YOUR PRESIDENT

        • Elisha -  April 25, 2016 - 9:23 pm

Exactly, the anti christ comes as a godly man, Christ like. Smooth with his words. Him along with his name fit the part well. An actor that serves his dark masters, and fools the fool

        • Jennifer -  May 21, 2016 - 1:16 pm

Herbert, you are thoroughly deceived. How can you say that Barack is godly? If the Bible says that God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah for a specific sin (figure it out) and God calls it an “ABOMINATION” which means to make God want to vomit. How does it make sense that Obama went directly against the Holy Bible and set into law the exact opposite. Pray for yourself. We are called as Christians to STAND FOR THE TRUTH. We are not pacifists. Yes we are called to pray for our President but if he is clearly committing evil which he is we are to REBUKE him. Just remember soon and very soon “EVERY KNEE SHALL BOW AND EVERY TONGUE SHALL CONFESS THAT JESUS IS LORD TO THE GLORY OF GOD THE FATHER!: AMEN

        • Max D -  June 12, 2016 - 7:56 pm

God specifically tells us in the Bible to worship nothing before him and hold nothing higher than him, why then must we pledge allegiance to a country. It’s against his word . The reason the version of the Bible you’re reading contains this ,is its most likely a king James or Catholic Bible . And with some research you’d know that Pope Francis is the 112 pope that Jesus foretold would come. He is the black Pope.

This entire article is largely correct. Simply put Barack means lightning or “in vain”. I’m sure that people are trying to hide the true meaning because of the presidents title but it certainly DOES NOT mean blessed. But good try! His name actually fits perfectly he is like threatening lightening and his leadership can definitely be described as vain. They should fix this definition instead of lying to the public.

    • Kei -  November 19, 2015 - 6:20 pm

You can bash president Obama all you want but don’t use a false premise to do it. His name is from the Arabic bārak, a cognate of the Hebrew name Barukh, which both DO mean blessed. But good try!

“Why would a non-Jew have a completely Jewish name?”

      • Anne Truth -  January 21, 2016 - 1:51 am

It’s not a Jewish name it’s a Hebrew name and it’s biblical. The story of Barak is found in the book of Judges.

    • Stewart -  November 23, 2015 - 9:27 am

Doesn’t matter what the name means, it’s your actions which count, so those who love him will think he walks on water, those who can’t stand the man think he’s the Antichrist, I think the later.

      • Johnandvsn -  January 31, 2016 - 10:41 am

I totally understand I used to hear rumours Ronald Regan was the Anti Christ because of the number of six letters in his full name. That was wrong thinking also. It is God who has the authority to judge us and for that I am grateful. Man would condemn me far quicker than God.

    • GH -  November 25, 2015 - 4:36 am

It depends on which root it comes from in Arabic/Hebrew. Both have words that start with the B-R sound, but there are different letters to complete the K sound at the end, and depending on which letter it is, it could either be the “lightning” root or the “blessing” root.

The name Obama in Luo language from which the name is derived has three parts ‘Obam’- meaning it has bent/curved/going against expectation(noun) ‘Bam’- meaning bent/curved/going astray/thigh(though this one has no place when used in someones name) and so Obama simply means someone who bends things or more derogatory ‘someone with a body defect’.
Am also from the Luo community in Kenya same as Obama’s father and 90% of male surnames start with O

    • Sharon -  June 15, 2016 - 5:05 pm

Obama’s name in any other language than the one he was given is totally irrelevant. A word which sounds the same in a different language could and probably does mean something totally different! It is ludicrous to confuse the issue with like sounding words from some language other than the one with which his name was derived! Example: An English word can sound like a Croatian word, but have absolutely no relation in the meanings!

  12. Laura -  April 11, 2015 - 12:11 pm

I was curious if Barack meant success. I am put off by the paranoid people who believe there is a Google conspiracy to protect the dark name meaning of Barack. Did you also look you the meaning of Stalin, Hitler or serial molester Bill Clinton. Do you even know that most wars were caused and started by white people due to greed and paranoia. Always hyper vigilant and over prepared for the day your stolen fortune is repossessed. Why are you so STUPID?

    • meshuge Mikey -  April 20, 2015 - 8:15 am

Al Buraq..”was” a Fabled Creature supposedly ridden by Mohammed!

Yes its pronounced precisely the same as Barack,

      Now doesnt THAT beat all!?

    • R Pangburn Jr. -  May 21, 2015 - 9:09 pm

I may be STUPID? but you are FUNNY!! I loved the Bill Clinton.

Wow, so much anger. A name is just a name folks.

As an aside, Stalin was not his original name, it means ‘man of steel’, and he adopted it to make himself sound tougher.

      • shelley -  October 3, 2015 - 6:37 am

Right!! So, therefore a ‘name is NOT just a name’!! What an idiotic thing to say!
If names were so irrelevant why did God place so much emphasis on them, why do entertainers and movie stars adopt new names to enhance their popularity and why do names attribute so much identity… Smith/ Baker/ Ramsbottom? (Ugly mothers face im guessing) haha

No point for brains buddy nor lack there of!!

      • alison -  May 21, 2016 - 7:13 am

:) some people put too much stock into a birth name. It is not a name that makes a person, but rather a person makes a name. If the person is good and wise, people will associate the name with goodness and wisdom.

    • Todd -  September 28, 2015 - 12:21 pm

Most wars are created only by white people? You do realize that white people are a minority in the world population right?

    • Stef -  October 4, 2015 - 2:15 pm

the fact that you just called out white people as a problem makes YOU the stupid one. Open your eyes to what is really going on and stop following blindly.

    • Valida -  October 7, 2015 - 12:25 am

And why are you so racist?

    • JJ -  November 26, 2015 - 10:21 am

Laura, I’m a white American and I strive to be moderately vigilant and adequately prepared. Preparation gets a person ready for what is to come and vigilance allows a person to envision what he/she should prepare for. You’re statement could (possibly should) be viewed offensively by many. You asked, “do you even know that most wars were caused and started by white people due to greed and paranoia?” No, I was not aware that paranoid and greedy white people were the cause to most wars. Do you have credible data and/or sources to back that bold statement up? Now, I have a question for you. Would you get a pen and piece of paper, write down your statement, and replace “white people” with one of the minority groups that call this country home? Now, read it aloud to yourself or a friend and discuss or ponder whether the statement could/should be perceived as racism directed toward white Americans.

    • Anne Truth -  January 21, 2016 - 2:05 am

Really? So then I guess the wars that have been going on non stop in the east are all white people? You must be African American because racism somehow always creeps in to every discussion. If you scroll down to the bottom of Google or go a few pages over the definition changes. Ever heard of shills? Literally their job is to dominate discussion forums and social networks to sway public opinion. As a matter of fact Facebook is being sued right now for doing this. So Google that. It’s called politics not conspiracy theory.

      • Just Saying -  March 15, 2016 - 4:53 pm

        Dear Americans,

Why are people behaving as though they are ignorant, why can’t we agree to disagree, or better yet why can’t we just ask his family or the Luo people or actually conduct our own primary research to determine what his name actually means, instead of all this negative speculation and insults which are childish and sad….it’s exactly like the birther issue, he proved without a doubt that he’s American, unless now Hawaii is no longer a part of America.

His name matters not, just the actions of the man himself, so can we stop this racist nonsense, because the truth of it is, is that we are people, we are human, we all have a heart, a soul, a body, a mind, despite how it forms, the only difference we share that really matters is that we are, our own person, and it is our responsibility to be good citizens so that we can all prosper, or are we forgetting our Christian values.

And in any case, deciding that a person’s name that they are born with, which they do not have control over, like “Talula the girl who does the hula” or “Anita Bath,” or the various interesting names I could list here, determines their life or is attached to biblical passages is ridiculous, unless that is exactly what his parents intended to do, which no one has been willing to ask, or can ask, we should keep our speculations peaceable, and decide whether or not being a racist and/or bigot really answers the question, what his name really means.

In one phrase I’d like to conclude that both in Christianity and with the Founding Fathers the most important idea, was to have people who were FREE to do as they please without harming those around them, or being harmed themselves….FREEDOM of SPEECH still allows you to be ignorant but do you really want to be seen that way….just saying

      Barack means “white” in arabic.

    • Sharon -  June 15, 2016 - 5:09 pm

Names in all languages do not necessarily have a meaning at all! The parents just like the sound of the name, or think it is a pretty name, such as American names. But there are some languages in which ALL of their names have a meaning. Middle Eastern names (Israelis, Arabs, etc), and African names DO have meanings.

  13. Gelly -  December 6, 2013 - 10:13 pm

Also barack means the “devil.” And it means “crooked.” It depends on what language meaning you search under. However, now these two meanings of barack are no longer searhable. If you would have researched his name in google way before he became president, like back in the late 90′s and early 2000′s these two meanings would have surfaced. Strangely enough, the internet search engines have been tampered with. And I wonder why? …

    • Vanessa Mullins -  December 29, 2014 - 4:07 pm

I completely agree. I searched it when he was first elected and very deep dark meanings to his name came up. But the internet, especially google is all controlled. They let you see what they ALLOW you to.

      • Anne Truth -  January 21, 2016 - 2:22 am

Names are always expressed by the character of the person who has the name in the Bible. You can start I’m judges chapter 8 I believe. But the word anti-Christ means anyone in opposition to Christ. The major issue is not necessarily with Barack but the office he holds. The Vatican is depicted as the woman who rides the beast which is interpreted to be the USA. The woman held a gold cup, draped in red and purple, she would have the name of a number 666, and bare the name blasphemy. The popes name I believe in Latin is VICARIOUS FILII DEI which in Roman numerals equals the sign of the beast. Then the woman rode the dragon that spake like a lamb. The dragon came out of the earth (earth in the bible means not that many people) and it would be a world power and it made an image to the first beast. The Vatican and Washington DC looks identical in architecture. Are calendars are Roman etc etc. the major thing to worry about is whether you have given your heart to God. Jesus is prophesied to come once the terrible trials have begun. At this time every humans fate will be sealed with either the seal of God or the mark of the beast. This basically means if your serving the world or the prince of the earth (Satan) or are you serving God. It’s not really all about Barack or the Pope per say. It’s more about these powers coming together to change Gods laws which clearly we know this is already happening.

        • Anne Truth -  January 21, 2016 - 3:03 am

I’m sorry Jesus comes AFTER the trials have come to a conclusion not beforehand. It’s also important to note that we will all still be here during the trials when the plagues and other woes are released. If you have the mark of God you will be protected through it the unsaved will not. Two more important things to know is that Jesus will come from the heavens he will never step foot on the earth AND once the trials begin (it will be a terrible time like never ever seen in history and I mean were talking serious financial crisis, terrible non stop weather, excessive crime, water contamination and it will be world wide not just in a few countries) Christians are commanded to leave the cities quickly and not to worship the beast power (which indicates there will be persecution for those who believe in God.)

          • Rochelle -  March 11, 2016 - 12:51 pm

            Hi Anne,

I would like to thank you for your Insight. it appears you’ve been setting for some time. I too have been studying for the last couple of years which I consider a short time. I was curious about the scriptures you read that brings you to your understanding in regards to pre or post Armageddon rapture. the majority of pastors that I have ever heard speak on the subject most will proclaim pre rapture. I have always had a problem with this, but considering the circumstances gladly accept it. I also have great concern and issues with basic Christianity and the churches of today coming together for worship on Sunday. I understand that we are too worship God everyday. although in the Ten Commandments God clearly states to keep the Sabbath day holy. I’m not exactly sure where it is in the Bible but I do know that I have read that the evil doers and followers of Satan will change times and laws. in my opinion that is exactly what the Roman Catholic Church of that time has done. and now today we follow according to those laws that were set by Constantine and the first Catholic priesthood. have you ever read the book called National Sunday law. somehow this book ended up in my garage when I was cleaning it out one day and I felt led to read it. it was very interesting to say the least. If youlook it up you will find a readable copy online.

I bring this up because I believe it goes along with the conversation within this community chat when Jesus sat down on the mountain Matthew 5 – 7 and again what he called the Beatitudes or The Sermon on the Mount he clearly states that he did not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it and not one pen stroke or word should be changed from The Ten Commandments. my question is to everyone reading this is why do we continue to go to church on Sunday. when God clearly told us to go to church on Saturday or the 7th Day. in actuality the seventh day begins on Friday evening and continues through Saturday evening. isn’t it funny how so many people in this world have no problem and enjoy looking forward to going out Friday evening to drink hang out with their friends used bad language get dressed up in clothing that would cause a Man Too lust in his heart and then eventually fornicate and commit adultery. or maybe it’s not funny at all. Maybe we should be flocking to churches on Friday evening to hear the true word of God and go out on on Sunday the first day of the week to find the lost to preach the gospel and to help those in need. just a thought.

Anne I hope you do respond to this message because I would surely like to know the scriptures that helped you to understand that the Rapture will be post Armageddon versus the widely preached post Armageddon. thank you Anne so much for your time your consideration and your response I hope you have a truly blessed day Rochelle

The word Barack is an Arabic/Muslim name. In Arabic is written as براق which is the name of the donkey which was used by Prophet Muhammad (صلعم) to travel from Mecca to the Holly land-Palestine. براق was tied to the Barack Holly Wall and the Arc Angle carried the Prophet to visit the the seventh sky to meet all the Prophets. So that Barack is a Holly Muslim name.
The above link will shed more lights on Barack Holly Wall

    • person -  July 2, 2014 - 9:18 am

The word borax is from Arabic būraq (بورق), meaning “white”; which is from Middle Persian bwrk, which might have meant potassium nitrate or another fluxing agent, now known as būrah (بوره). Another name for borax is tincal, from Sanskrit…Traditional Arabic dictionaries say that it derives from the verb “to glisten”, which is also written بورق 〈bwrq〉, but it seems to actually derive from the Persian بوره būrah “borax”.[8]

A man’s character makes his name. In my opinion, Barrack Obama means a man of excellent character, good family man, smart politician, a fighter, fine orator and a man all together worthy of respect. He is a “Fusion” of the two major races of the United States and his being President can help to heal the curse of racism which haunts our people. Only silly people take a man’s name as more important than his character.

Words mean all but only words. You my friend are a biggot, an inconclusive undeniably impassive biggot who passes everything for what beliefs they feel should be from what centuries of society’s substance has been from the beginning until now. Just please from this point on in life from your existence until further end speak with more prosperous welleaning that people can follow, respect, and comprehend.

      • Geoff Rodland -  January 10, 2015 - 8:54 am

According to your statement ” worlds are only words” what then is a biggot. I’m asumiing you are saying a biggot is someone who has Big got or gain. Or much wealth. Maybe you even meant a loving person when u said biggot, I don’t know about you I myself believe that words in every language have meanings, ignorance, for example, the answers are right in your face and you still are always wrong, being you Choose to ignore them! Big little man with camping water up down the pot for and bowling superiority, if words are JST words every sentence would appear as this one does, JST words. I guess. Like I say do you and love others, this should leave you happy and feeling fulfilled, I am not mocking you my friend or even trying to make fun, JST pointing out that words do mean things, that is how we communicate. Arabic is not a race, it’s a language, and one spoken widely amongst Africans where Islam is more common. As for the link between a person’s name and his (or her) character, there are those who believe that using a person’s name is like a prayer to impart the meaning of that name onto the person. Of course, that is a cultural belief that not everyone subscribes to. One is free to agree or disagree with this idea.

      • jason -  April 29, 2015 - 9:22 am

It’s not about black or white we are all human, and should want to only help and do good for others, and what is up with that devilish grin he always has on his face, what’s he so happy about he is literally destroying our country piece by piece, things that people have fought and lost there life for over the course of our great nation and he is on a mission to strip this of us, open your eyes and drop the race card my friend. And WHY is God never mentioned in any of his plans , the scary thing is what’s next, who’s next, maybe nothing.

      • T.wright -  September 26, 2015 - 12:52 pm

Truthfully its like this, I believe in God, I believe in the Bible, every word, and Barack O’bama is the anti Christ and no one can tell me different! Think about it, of all the presidents America has had, y is he the only one to give “gay rights” now I’m not against gays, to each his own, I don’t do Gods work and judge, but its written and its wrong! Clinton to me was our best pres and he didn’t do it! O’bama is the only pres to make peace with other leaders in other countries, its written! The pope has never been in the US, he’s Catholic, other religions came from all around, so inspired, so happy, but people don’t realize that in the end he’s gonna be right beside O’bama as the religious leader, people will be worshipping him instead of God, its written! Blod red moon tomorrow, the Lord’s last seal to be broken!!! Y’all betta wake up and get focused and right if ur not! My opinion, just like a rump hole, everybody has one!

First of all, it’s a secular country (thank god for that). Second of all, why would he? He might not be religious, he doesn’t have to be. You know, atheists are also people in this world, with good moral values. Believing in god is not based on facts, is based on faith. So you either believe in him or you don’t, no big debate about that one.

        • Rochelle -  March 11, 2016 - 1:38 pm

That Amen was to Geoff Roland…
people should read Matthew 5 through 7 and there’s also this little book called National Sunday law. this book was an eye-opener for me and I went back injected in Scripture and it was all there. here’s something to think about…

what if everything that is written in the Bible is 100% completely truthful?

but yet so many people because of their own agenda do not want to open their eyes to the truth in the word.

honestly is there anything in the Bible that is put there for your harm? there are a lot of scriptures in the Bible that teaches good and moral behavior. but I have yet to find any Scripture that teaches any person to behave unkind immoral or just plain ugly. so here’s another question

if the Bible is true… is it worth living in hell a horrible place describe with terrible fear and reliving every bad or stupid mistake you have ever made continuing forever and ever. there is no light there is no God there is no good. is it worth it to you to spend your eternity in such a place all because you didn’t want to give up your Friday night your immoral Behavior?

all because you did not want to give your life to the one created it to the one that would teach you the right way to live to help you live out the purpose he gave you on this Earth is it just because you are selfish and self-centered and refused to die to yourself?

back when I was in my twenties I would have considered myself a very moral person the very nice person I didn’t lie I didn’t cheat on my boyfriend I didn’t go out and steal or purposely try to hurt anybody but I had no clue none whatsoever of what the word of God says I did not have a relationship with Jesus the Holy Spirit or God and after many years of living this way I finally came to a conclusion set my life was meaningless.

it was in 2008 when I truly became saved and shortly after I happen to come across a flyer on a friend of mine’s frigerator. this is what I read:

is it better to live your life believing in God believing in heaven n hell and find out there is no heaven or hell.

Or is it better to live your life not believing in God not believing in heaven and find out there is a God and a heaven and a hell?

that was the day it really hit meI can live and be used by God and have a Victorious Life or I can live according to my own purposes and continue in the miserable life I was living. so from that day forward I began learning the word of God. my life has changed dramatically I still go through some struggles but I always get through them and God has not let me down yet

as far as Obama is concerned…

if you do read the Bible can understand what is written therein you also understand that this is a necessary part of History.personally I have had my concerns regarding Obama and the antichrist since the first day I saw a picture actually a negative of a picture that my son brought home from school. I’m not a political person I did not vote for Obama either.I believe as a Christian a true follower not just a fan of God we need to look at the platform of each presidential candidate and make a decision according to the fruit that that person bares.

this is what I did when did Obama had originally ran the first time for presidency.and since then Obama has directly spoken out against God’s word against God and has broken Covenant in the Ten Commandments with allowing same-sex marriage. I cannot morally or ethically support anyone or anything that opposes itself to the word of God. I am so frustrated and tired of hearing so many people who claim to be Christians say these words… I have my own relationship with God but yet don’t understand a word what is written in the Bible and only want to have a relationship with Jesus according to their own terms. Luke 646 Jesus says why do you call me Lord Lord and not do what I say. Matthew 721 only those who do the work and the will of my father will enter the kingdom of heaven. it seems pretty clear to me and if you have not fully and completely submitted your will to the authority of God’s will and you are not a saved Christian, Jesus does not know you.

If you really study would hell is like you may change your mind. again I ask is it worth it?

          • Kam -  May 24, 2016 - 7:46 pm

Rochelle, have you actually read Leviticus? You speak of sin of homosexuality.
I would like to know if you keep your hair covered. Do you stay away from all men who are not family members? I hope that you do not eat shrimp, crab, lobster or any type of pork product. At least, be sure that you do not wear denim or any other types of mixed material. Be sure to not do anything on the Sabbath either; you do know that a man who picks up sticks should be stoned to death. Right? After all, these are God’s laws.
By the way, do you have a link (other than FOX) which will provide information as to win Obama spoke out against God’s word? It doesn’t really matter since America is a secular nation and not a Christian one. However, I am curious as to where you got your information,

          • Peanut -  June 8, 2016 - 2:19 am

            Hi Rochelle

There is nothing written in the ten commandments about same sex marriage. The tem commnedments are clearly about lively respectfully in a community.

            They are:

I am the Lord, your God. (You shall have no other gods before me.)
Thou shall bring no false idols before me. (You shall not make for yourself an idol)
Do not take the name of the Lord in vain.
Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy. (Which is actually Saturday, but most Christians celebrate Sunday)
Honor thy father and thy mother.
            Thou shall not kill/murder
            Thou shall not commit adultery.
            Thou shall not steal.
Thou shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. (lie)
Thou shall not covet your neighbor’s wife (or anything that belongs to your neighbor). – This is about desire and jealousy.

You may think that same sex marriage is an abomination but many Christians believe Jesus taught love and respect for all human-kind and that overrules all other laws. I was certainly taught that by my religious teachers.

            Kind regards

          • Netlace -  July 16, 2016 - 2:55 pm

Rochelle, You are on the right track. Do not let others sway you. The Sabbath is Saturday and has never been changed. Rome made the change many years ago. The mark of the beast is over worship. My favorite verse is Hebrews 4:8, please read it. The Geneva bible and Kjv have it correct. All other translations use the name Joshua instead of Jesus. The reason for the change is the translators of the Geneva bible put in the commentary “Joshua son of Nun” . Read the bible over and over and you will know the truth of everything. Every time you read it more light is given. Amazing and beautiful truth. Pray for those who only listen to their pastors and do not search the scriptures for their self. The end of time is so close, the second woe is past,One more to go. And regarding Barack Obama, he was groomed for presidency since birth. Every president we have had in the last 500 years was chosen. Your vote makes no difference. Barack will be the president when the lord returns. We are that close… He and Francis will usher in these last hard days. God will protect his remnant (Sabbath) keepers. His word is true!

How can anyone say obama has excellent character, is healing our country?. He has done everything in his power to destroy America. Under obama america has become so divided not united. He tramples on our rights ( which many americans fought and died for) he disregards the US constitution, which he swore he would uphold and defend. Very untrust worthy. He lies every time he opens his mouth. Instead of taking care of important matters he runs off to play golf. America open your eyes, stop the race card game, obama is a threat and enemy to this country

      • Margie -  March 2, 2015 - 4:30 pm

I have to agree with you on what you said because we have riots and everything has gone down hill no jobs no money to live people are robbing other for money and food because we cant survive unless we as a country get our freedom back because it is freedom that is being taken wake up people we as a country are coming to an end.

    • True Patriot -  May 16, 2015 - 10:32 pm

“Barack Obama” means “lightning from heaven”. In the bible it says the devil was cast down like lightning from heaven. Obama has done more to divide the races than any other president that has ever been. He is an evil man who means to do great harm to the Unites States of America and he has done a good job of that. He is full of empty promises just as the evil one and I am pretty sure that when it comes time for for the Antichrist to surface that he will indeed prove out to be him. Pray for our Nation and all the people of the world. In a time where I thought racism ended so many years ago, and where it had died a slow but sure death in this Nation, Obama has breathed new life into it and the financially challenged, the lower IQ, the down and out are all the easiest prey for him to revive racism and he is playing and preying on these people with his evil plan to divide us and its working. He knows that if we are united, we stand and divided we fall so he must divide us. I wish all races would wake up and see the fools they are being played for and come back together and tell the crooks in the District of Criminals we won’t stand for this anymore. Put your skin color away and bring out your hearts and minds and you will see that we are all of the same cloth. The cloth of Jesus Christ!

      • T.wright -  September 26, 2015 - 12:59 pm

Amen, but honey, in the Bible, it is written, the Lord said that racism will come back and it will be just as worse! So regardless of what we do as good Christians, if its written, it shall be done!

    • Michele -  August 29, 2015 - 9:19 pm

It’s funny your comment is over 2 1/2 years old and yet there is more, media fueled, racism than ever before. He hasn’t helped our country – he’s hurting it and it’s a shame that people can’t see it. We’re like sheep being led to the slaughter

A man’s character does truly make his name. Even if he has no name. But how is the character of a man determined without actions? A man’s name is made of sounds, but his character is composed of his actions. So his name is his actions, not the sounds that proceed prom his lips.

Lucy Gould – Aunty Lou Lou,

I think it’s great that you’re watching out for your niece. I don’t know how old your niece is or the story behind it all. All I see is that you’ve taken the time and energy to check what she’s doing. Some may say it’s teaching distrust and disrespect. I think you are correct in checking on her. You don’t know who she’s opening herself up to, the dangers of the internet are endless. Not to mention what you plainly stated, “at that hour”. You are setting a great example for all parents, guardians, aunts, uncles, and anyone else who has someone who they are responsible for. Keep up the good work and good examples!!!

Pomaikailani is my birth given middle name from my Hawaiian/Irish/and a bunch of other stuff father.

Pomaikailani is a combination of words. “pomai” – “kai” – “lani” which are all words by themselves with their own separate meanings. But all together, it means fragrance from heaven, heavenly fragrance, heavenly flower, flower fragrance from heaven. The Hawaiian language was very limited on words so, many words had multiple meanings. For example, aloha… Meaning hello and goodbye.

about the supposed ‘mispronunciation’, I don’t think it is possible to ‘mispronounce’ the name Barack, we all have accents and are inclined to pronounce words in certain ways. It does not make our pronunciation wrong, it just makes it different. In fact ‘Barack’ is an anglicized spelling or either the Hebrew or Swahili original names Baruch and Barak; so should we not pronounce it in any of the anglicized ways? If pronunciation is such a big issue why don’t we just say it like his daddy does, hey?

@AMY-LOU What? Do you even know french, Amy has no significance in french (that I know of), unless you’re talking about “ami”, which means friend. Blair doesn’t mean beauty nor does it mean bell maker in french. However, if you’re talking about “belle, well then, yes, that means beautiful. I’m not sure where you got those definitions…

According to the Bible the name Barack is of a General who helps Queen Deborah fight and defeat Israelis! Wonder why this website doesn’t refer to it at all?

-it’s actually General Barak and he helped
defeat the canaanite army who oppressed the Israelites.

Ehud Barak was the PM of Israel and currently is minister of defense..

@bje: Silver didn’t ask what FDR stands for. He asked what the names mean. So there’s no reason to call him a doodle head.

@Ashar Husain: Yes, that is true. But the Hebrew word “barak” means lightning. It’s a different root and different pronunciation from “baruch”, which the article did mention. But seeing as our president got his name from African which got it from Arabic which got it from Hebrew, the spelling and pronunciation were altered along the way, and it ended up pretty much the same as “Barak” (lightning). And, Zvi Kedem, I believe you are wrong to say that it “should” be spelled “Baraq”. It’s not an English word, and not even in the same alphabet, so there’s no “should” for it.

@Julie: I believe that when Ashar Husain said “Israelis” he meant “people who lived in the land of Israel.” But I agree with you that that’s not the best word to use, seeing as the land was not called Israel at the time, as it wasn’t yet inhabited by the Israelites after whom it is named.

@Faith: Who’s FDR? You’ve got to be kidding. I sincerely hope that, if you’re asking that (or at least meant to ask it – in actuality, you wrote “Who’d FDR?”), you are not American.

  37. thedefenestrator -  September 7, 2010 - 3:15 am

I hardly think the mispronunciation of ‘Barack’ is either ‘deliberate’ or ‘willful’, and it most certainly does not apply to the entirety of Britain (I’m quite sure that BBC News and other broadcasters pronounce it ‘correctly’). It seems a little extreme to ‘comdemn’ such a natural linguistic process; names of people and places are adapted to suit the phonological system of a language variety all the time! Take ‘Iraq’ for example — I’ve heard it as [ıɹak] ‘irak, [ıɹa:k] ‘irahk’ and [aıɹak] ‘eyerak’ – from both Brits and Americans – and I’m sure none of them are entirely accurate! It just tends to depend on what is picked up by the masses, and what suits the existing langage of a country. I appreciate some Brits might not pronounce it how he pronounces it, but that’s hardly a crime!

  40. jay linnell -  September 5, 2010 - 8:00 pm

Franklin: Formerly “Frankeleyn”, borrowed English from Middle French “frankeleyn”, meaning “landowner who is free but not of noble origin”.

Delano: Anglicized name (ca, mid-17th century) of the descendants of Philippe de Lannoy. “de Lannoy” itself comes from the town of Lannoy. “L’aunaie” means “alder plantation, from the Latin “altenum”.

Roosevelt: From the Dutch “Van Rosevelt”, or “from the rose field”.

So he was a free landowner, paradoxically from both an alder plantation and a rose field.

I know MacDowell (from MacDougal) means [son of] dark stranger, but I’d love to know the meanings or origins of my other family surnames, like Russell, Pile, and mainly, Peart. I have a spicy family history, but we had a Rabbi in our family associated with the name Russell, which makes things a bit more interesting.

“According to the Bible the name Barack is of a General who helps Queen Deborah fight and defeat Israelis! Wonder why this website doesn’t refer to it at all?” Excellent point, but there is an explanation.

Because it is a different name that should actually be spelled “Baraq,” just like mine should be spelled “Qedem.” It is the same as the last name of the former Prime Minister of Israel Ehud Barak. It means “thunderbolt,” as does the last name of the Carthaginian general Hannibal Barca, though it is better to look at his father’s entry http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamilcar_Barca. I do not know Arabic, but it seems to mean the same in Arabic.

I was just listening to the audiobook yesterday of Dreams of My Father. Barack himself offers a definition of Obama in the book. According to him, the meaning of Obama has some “warrior” meaning. I don’t recall the detail. It was also the name of his great-grandfather. It’s common in that part of the world for children to take on their father’s or grandfather’s names as family names. Consider the story of Ayaan Hirsi Ali. She took the name of an atypical grandfather when she came to the West in order to hide from her family.

Brits mispronounce “Barack” as “barrack” (báa.rak) all the time. What kind of arrogance does it take to willfully mispronounce the name of the President of the United States, in order to give it a British twist when it is not British in the slitest? I listen with incredulity to this endless, deliberate mispronunciation on BBC News and other foreign sources. Why hasn’t anybody condemned this?
