There’s a Word for Why Adele’s Music Makes You Cry

Adele at the Grammys

Adele, whose single “Hello” debuted at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 list in 2015, will be performing at this year’s Grammy Awards. Year after year, one thing remains constant with the Grammy winner’s music: It makes the tears flow.

You may think her soulful lyrics are the reason songs like “Hello” and “Someone Like You” turn on the water works, but there’s a whole lot more going on in Adele’s music.

Surprisingly, it’s not the words that are really making you cry: Adele makes ample use of appoggiaturas, or grace notes. Literally meaning “a propping up,” appoggiaturas are notes that are not essential to the harmony or the melody of a song, but that create tension. According to music psychologists, returning to the melody from appoggiaturas relieves that tension, relieving the listener, too.

And that’s when you cry.

Her lyrics probably don’t hurt, either. Or, rather, they do. They hurt a lot.

What IS funny, though, is the Google Translate version of “Hello” . Also, from Google Translate version of something by Taylor Swift- “Baby I’m a nightmare dressed like a screensaver.”

This was supposed to be a place to submit important thoughts relating to the topic of this article, not a place where people get into arguments and say bad words. Personally, I don’t care that much about famous people, because they all kind of star to look the same and sound the same to me. Also, people who love Adele, please don’t go making yourselves look like witless morons. Because I hope you’re not, though if you are, I feel bad for you.

As an outside observer who neither worships nor despises any particular artist (that whole “change the channel” thing really does work wonders — as does “pay no attention”), it seems to me that the Adele “haters” are really the ones who are coming across as witless morons. Why get so worked up over any artist’s offerings, just because it doesn’t suit your own personal tastes? Does it really affect your life that much? And why does one assume that one’s own aesthetic tastes must somehow dictate some objective reality, or even matter that much all that much, period? What works of beauty or art have the critics offered the world, to make it a better, more enjoyable experience? Rather, ridiculously and unjustifiably egocentrical, if you ask me (which, of course, no one did). Adele’s music is as popular as it is for any number of reasons for a wide variety of people, including, yes, a certain musicality, the appreciation of which not everyone will, or needs to share. “Haters” really need to gain some perspective and come to grips with, if nothing else, their own relative insignificance.

Thomas. Very succinctly put. I think appreciating or liking music or the artist who created or sang it, is totally subjective. And just like many other things in life, likes and dislikes about songs -and the artists who render them- are solely contingent upon ones own predilections. I also agree that one can disagree without being disagreeable: while it’s our prerogative to voice our likes or dislikes it would be discerning on our part not to take our critiquing -either way- to the point of revulsion.

Adele does NOT make me want to cry…except from the pain of her incessant screaming…she is either screaming or whispering…she knows not singing…i puke a little in my throat when her songs are on the radio or in a store….I simply cannot fathom her popularity…but alas, many if not most singers these days are the well trained ilk that have such well controlled voices that they insist musicality upon us even when the timbre and melody is not at all enjoyable…Gwen Stefani being another of those who thrust, or force a song …having such well trained and controlled voices as to be able to ‘make’ music where others, including more discerning listeners, would have abandoned the attempt before it started…please, make the Adele’s of the world go away!

Scott, don’t think I want to blame you for liking Adele’s music. But your suggestion ‘change the channel – problem solved’ doesn’t work for me, since I don’t listen to music on a ‘channel’. I’m forced to listen to it all too often simply because I spend a lot of my time in eating and drinking places with piped music (just try finding one that doesn’t have any!). I wouldn’t even have known who Adele was, or which of the music was hers (stardom doesn’t interest me in the least) – except that whenever I hear something that grates on my ear and then ask the staff who the singer is, it all too often turns out to be Adele (or else Alicia Keys). I won’t go into the reasons why it grates on my ear, since that’s subjective (though as a part-time musician I have my ideas). I just want to say I don’t dislike her music just because it’s Adele, I just find I dislike certain music and a lot of what I dislike just turns out to be hers. And unfortunately I can’t avoid hearing it, because it’s played all over the place. How I wish the places I eat and drink in would change the channel. Problem is, they aren’t about to.

Uhm if you don’t like her music, then don’t listen to her music. Simple. They put a lot of work into their work and if anything her passion would move me if I were a fan of Adele, which I don’t happen to be. But, however, I still respect that she is able to make music that is able to move hundreds, if not thousands, so before you can criticize her so blatantly, perhaps you should reach her level. After all, “if you want to criticize a God, you first have to reach the level of a God and witness the grief and pain it has to bear. If not, how else would you be a God?” So, someday, when you reach her level and are able to sway thousands, return and only then will we open our ears to comments that have experience and value backing them up. Adios! ^-^

“American Dream” by Casting Crowns (my fave band) makes me cry. it’s the lyrics, not the music, tho. So sad… :(
2 scenes from the Warriors series by Erin Hunter have brought tears to my eyes. The 1st is when Graystripe leaves ThunderClan to go join RiverClan with his kits. The 2nd is when Cinderpaw is in the medicine den because of her injury, and Fireheart is visiting her, and he says, “We’ll find the oldest, slowest mouse in the forest and catch him together. He won’t stand a chance.” Both scenes were really sad. (Although I have to admit, there’s a lot of heartbreak in Warriors…)

Look at the lyrics for “Someone like you”… Honestly, is that the kind of women you’d want to be? One that gets dumped and still worships the guy that screwed her? Please…. Or even worst, is it that she promotes passive-aggressive behaviours with her lyrics, making a stern critic sound like it is just pure love… pick your poison….

Adele’s music is so pleasing to both the ear and the heart. One of the main reasons behind the effectiveness and the ability for most to relate to the situation is personal experiences. Who hasn’t been in a situation that she describes in her songs? She is also a strong supporter of equality and has a voice to really help shape the intolerant nation into one that is more fair and equal.

Patricia has a point there. If you can relate to the lyrics, it affects you emotionally. I remember my father-in-law showing me a dvd of Adele (he’s the one who introduced me) saying they always make him cry and me and my spouse watching the video of this song about breaking up and being totally unmoved. We both never suffered from a really bad break up, so we couldn’t feel the pain of the lyrics and share it with his dad whom I assume did in his past before marrying.

Some people mentioned that Heavy Metal lover would not love Adele… and called the genre prone to dissonance. Well, I love both classical, orchestral (basically it’s not a genre, but you know, music without lyrics from movies, games, tv shows played by a whole orchestra), rock, and a good variety of metal. My husband has been playing electric guitar for 20 years. That doesn’t mean we’re unable to appreciate good music. Rather that some combination of notes can sound rather unoriginal to what is already out there. Pop music is very generic nowadays and lyrics are often bland and meaningless. Adele’s music is nice, it’s just not a type that fits everyone. Her lyrics are well constructed, but fail to touch me in a way I can relate to them. Now, take Savatage’s Believe, that’s pretty intense lyrics. They are good and have a deeply sad, but hopeful meaning.

Also, another important point I forgot: The mood you are in.
Don’t we all tend to listen to sad music when we are sad ourselves? Doesn’t it gets to us even more then? Imagine: a bad break up and all you listen to is sad love songs… The lyrics are so fitting you think. This song is amazing, it understands me and where I’ve been or where I am right now, you think. EXACTLY. Our mood also define how great a song we hear sounds to us. But on the other hand, when we a re feeling down, there’s nothing like our favourite happy song playing on the radio. But I would put “favourite songs” in a different category because a favourite song (not just the song of the moment that you really really like, I mean a song that you’ve heard most of your life and can still listen to it even if it’s not the number 1 hit on the radio anymore). It can be related to a past event, someone you like, a happy or sad or other mood even in your life: the song that played when you had your first kiss, that song that reminds you of your dad, etc.

All in all, mood and personal experience will have a great effect on how the lyrics affect us. As for the music itself, it might as well just be a matter of taste. Some people can’t stand techno music because they find it repetitive (for me, it gives me headaches), some hate Classic music for err… (frankly I can’t understand why!) it’s lack of punch maybe? or the kind of instruments used, the rhythm, plenty of reasons. We function differently, why can’t we analyze our liking of songs differently? Some sounds are aggressive to some and “music” to others. I can’t stand repetitive “boom boom” music after a while (headaches), but music boxes will make me cry.

On a last note, Chopin’s Tristesse has no lyrics. Some parts don’t feel so sad (“Tristesse” means “Sadness” in French), which confuse me, but there is a part of the song, where the rhythm is slowed, and that part makes me cry every time. Just as a killer, I have a music box of Tristesse. This is my Adele for all the Adele fans.

Thank you. I have not heard a single Adele song in its entirety. The song that makes me cry is “Someone Else’s Story.” When I went to Conservatory to major in Piano, our country’s National Artist for Music, Senora Lucretia Kasilag (popularly known as “King”) heard me playing on the piano a local pop song “Pag-dating Nang Panahon” (When the Time Comes) and she lightly repreminded us to respect love songs (in a tone endorsing the genre called Kundimans [Ballads]). She said love songs are love spells, and the song you sing the most, or the song you always find yourself unconsciously singing or humming, is or will be the story of your life.
“Someone Else’s Story” is the sad story of my love life.

Or maybe it was a self-fulfilling thing?
I dunno. Any take on that?

    Oh, where do I begin…

First of all, please don’t simply look up the definition of a grace note and try to tell people what a grace not is–PLEASE just comment on it if you’re ACTUALLY a musician and ACTUALLY know what a grace note is (and yes, I am a musician).

Second, I think Adele has a good voice, but the music itself of her songs isn’t all that great. Also, I thought her songs were okay the first time I heard them, but after hearing “Someone Like You” at least 3 gazillion times, it makes me want to barf every time I hear it.

    @Ray Waller:
Okay, I get it, you don’t like Adele. You put forth some pretty good arguments as to why Adele is not very talented, but much of your comment amounts to nothing but brainless name-calling. I don’t really like her either, but I don’t go around being rude to people.

    @Everyone Who Likes Adele:
That’s cool that you guys like Adele. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. But seriously, you’re acting as though Adele is the only singer who’s ever had any talent–so stop making fools of yourselves and stop worshipping her.
Also, it seems like every time someone posts something negative about her, you guys jump all over them and call them names and ask what’s wrong with them. Like I said, everyone is entitled to their own opinions, which also includes disliking Adele. So lighten up. There are plently of artists that I like that you may not like, but I’m not going to question your sanity or hearing ability.

Well I’m going to disagree a little. While yes the music and notes do have
a lot of emotion in them. If you even read her music as I have on several
occasions they as written words will make you cry as well!

Adele has the total package that makes her music spectacular.
She has classic looks, she has a voice that is to die for, she and her
other writing collaborators have and extreme gift with written words,
plus she and the others who help her write the music and produce it
are above all others. She should have a long and prosperous career
a head of her. Go Adele!

Some of the comments here are into moronic territory. And I notice that some Adele fans are posting similar garbage multiple times. Seriously, get a grip on reality people; you’re embarrassing yourselves.

Quote secret_man : “There are much better artists out there that are never recognized because they were never given the chance.”

And some of the best songs by popular singers don’t become popular hits. Artists like ABBA, Slim Dusty, Petula Clark sung some great songs which you wouldn’t believe possible if you only heard the trashy radio hits.
But it’s a similar story with everything in life.

She is a really good singer but I don’t exactly find myself breaking down and sobbing just because a couple of notes aren’t aligning with the melody. I guess there are enough people that experience this that radio DJs find it fitting to cram thirty of her songs into an hours’ worth of music.

True. Her music and lyrics are great, her voice is beautiful. However her personality also matters a great deal and it shows in her performance. I also liked the fact that despite of all those winnings she did not start thanking her mother, her father, her grandmother, grandfather, cousins, teachers, etc. like the guys from this side of the Atlantic do. Very matter of fact, down-to-earth and perhaps that’s another reason why people like her.

I love when artists break away from the original melody to include other notes. It arouses so much tension and emotion when it is done.

The reason why music affects so much is not only because of the musical notes but due to the lyrics as well. If the song has been created extremely well and has life’s meaning entwined within the lyrics and you have just gone through a bad situation that can relate to the song, the song can make you cry and let out all the frustrations that you have bottled up inside, on the other end if the song is a happy one it can lift your spirit. That is why many of us change stations quickly when a certain song comes on. It may bring back memories of a person you are trying to forget, or it may express the feelings that you are trying to hide and avoid. Yes music and the lyrics have a soothing and comfort zone for many of us. I personally do not know what I would have done without music. It helps me cope with many of the unfortunate situation we face daily. I think if society did not have music it would be an extremely sad world to live in. So for all those wonderful singers out there thank you for bringing love, happiness and sadness within our hearts. Keep the music coming for years to come.

“Does this impact come from the lyrics or from the notes themselves? Psychologists have been trying to figure this out, and it turns out it’s the music, not the words.”

This is nonsense. Sure, there could be some tunes (plus “grace notes”) that could have that sort of effect, but I’ve heard plenty of songs whose melodies I liked but whose lyrics I did not–and thus did not react positively to the song overall. On the other hand, there are also songs whose lyrics I like but whose melodies I don’t, and so I still don’t have much of a reaction.

Therefore it’s *both* the tunes and the words, not just one or the other (or one could read the lyrics without the music altogether, just as a poem, and be moved by that as well).

Adele can sing, there’s no doubt about it, but the British radio stations play ‘Someone Like You’ every 15 minutes (or so it seems) and I’ve heard it so many times now that the opening piano sequence really winds me up. I know I’m in a minority of one, but some things can be totally ruined by over-exposure and that song is one of them.

How are any “I love you Adele U R so awesome!” adding anything to this post? As if Adele would take the time to browse your comments…

On another note, grace notes are those melodic sounds sang after something like the last word of a phrase in lyrics, right?

I’d be curious to learn more about those things. As the post says, “The appoggiatura contrasts the melody and creates tension, according to musical psychologists.” But, I guess it’s different for everyone. For me, the effect of tension is more felt when the music suddenly stops completely, to be resumed with a booming effect or even just the continuity of the best part of the song being played again (i.e. Whitney Houston’s I will always love you). I wonder how that one is called.

Great song. Virtually no appoggiaturas in this song. An appoggiatura is more specific, it is a clear musical term, and more than simply “a note not essential to the melody or harmony” which is a highly debatable category of notes anyways.
There is one appoggiatura which repeats, as I hear it, six times total, three times and then repeated – in the least dramatic part of the song, on the words “uninvited,” “fight it,” and “reminded.” That’s it.
It’s the sound of her voice and the impassioned style she sings in which make us cry. It’s not appoggiaturas.

How idiotic can Americans (and the Wall street Journal) actually get??

Adele is so brilliant because of freakin’ “grace notes”? That is so increeeeedibly stupid. ALL musical compositions, boys and Goys, have grace notes. Ultimately this is indeed a typically Goyish, soul=less, John Phillip Sousa, honkey stiff-butt kind of thinking. What would a truly hip musician like Hoagie Carmichael have to say to this dunsky article? Oy! A grace note is simply the detail work of melodic and sonic composition–the final touches put upon meter, dynamics, transposition, harmony, and pitch, interval, and various other musical elements—their use by a composer or a singer is like a mechanic going over your engine one final time after repairing it, in order to clean up oil stains, pick up loose bolts, screw down the caps tighter, and make sure that the spark plugs are nice and tight.

Grace notes are nothing special, and in fact, few singers achieve ANY sort of truly memorable emotional effect MERELY through such a thing. Frank sinatra, a REAL singer achieved his resonance as a dramatic (grandioso, flebile, and focoso) and passionate (appasionatto) vocalist not through the singing of notes alone, but also through the lyric content of his songs—because singing depends upon both music and lyric for a full, coherent effect. Operatic vocalists have been demonstrating this simple truth to us for three hundred years. Ever hear of Enrico Caruso?

The sort of RESONANCE (there’s a much more serious and less child-like single ‘word’ that the author of this infantile article might have used to say what he seems to be trying to say) which the article alleges that this mediocre singer has would almost certainly only be achieved through a traditionally symbiotic cojoining of music AND lyric, because that’s how freakin music works. Even Madonna, in the pop genre, proves this simple truth. Even the success of William Hung, that pathetic little third rate singer from American Idol who functioned as comic relief, was in some sense due to the element of schmaltz (chicken fat), Schlock (second rate art), and Kitsch (a form of bad art so bad that it rises above its own bathos to achieve a sort of mock heroic energy and vitality, which I think describes Hung’s horrible but totally sincere and enthusiastic delivery of “She bangs, she bangs…”). Now, despite her merely ordinary prettiness of tone and timbre, Adele strikes me as being valuable, if she is at all, mostly because she has the Sincerity of a William Hung. She’s pastiche, more than art. Amy Winehouse was more the real damn thing. As usual, the artist is dead, while the mediocre performer gets all the grammys.

Yeah, I said that Adele is mediocre. Jeez, are we really this stupid now as Americans? Too many white Castle hamburgers since the Reagan administration, or what? For Christ’s sake, NORA JONES is still alive, still walking the planet, and still singing, ain’t she? What about Terence Trent D’Arby?? He could put this Adele McDonald’s Happy Meal plastic figure Adele on her ass with three notes (none of then grace notes).

Nora Jones and Amy Winehouse are both singers (Nora is a singer AND musician) of great talent, depth, and emotional RESONANCE, achieved, only in part, through their uses of acciaccatura (I think, listening to Adele, that this is the grace note the author really meant, or should have, had he been actually trying to talk seriously about music), grazioso, and appoggiatura. There are at least ten different types of grace notes, you see. If Stevie wonder is singing, or Bob Dylan, there are even more than that, my friends.

    Grace notes??

Hell, even “Octopus’s garden’ sung by Ringo Starr has grace notes. It’s like saying, ‘the secret to Ernest Hemingway’s brilliant work in prose as a novelist is in his use of something special and wonderful…punctuation! Jeez, are we really this stupid now? Maybe it explains the Iraq war, and how some Americans STILL THINK there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, and why there are Americans out there who are actually voting for Mitt Romney.

I like Adele because she’s REAL. I know people hear that all the time, and some question what that even means nowadays. Adele isn’t skinny (or fat, as those who saw her performance should have seen, as far as I’m concerned.) She’s funny. Most importantly, she reacts to situations not how she feels she should, but the way her heart tells her to and you can see that in her words and songs. The only thing about her I don’t always see with others is that she is very beautiful, but I believe she is naturally blessed. I won’t say she’s the first to touch me in this way but she’s definitely up there.

I know it’s easier said than done sometimes, and that’s what’s so sad about it; People want someone humble, to give others hope that we can do great things even if we don’t seem like every other celebrity. I feel celebrities get cocky with all that attention so I take new ones as they come and hope for the best. Adele’s been around for a while, though, and I’m wishing her the most success.

I really like Adele’s bluesy style of singing. Unfortunately, that sound is mostly obtained through years of smoking — like Amy Winehouse.

Adele is talented in every way. Her music is great, she is beautiful the way she is, she’s funny, kind and shouldn’t be judged because she smokes. She has a beautiful voice and I’m glad her surgery went fine. her music is touching and meaningful. I <3 you Adele!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Keep on going and don't stop yet!!!

    Sincerely,

    My question is…

Why are there so many misspellings on a dictionary.com article? “heared”, “pritty”, “inspirering”… the last commenter alone probably provided half of all the spelling mistakes on this page.

Adele has an amazing, beautiful voice and she deserves every single award she gets. If you have had a bad day, just crank up Adele. Her songs are so powerful – emotional and raw. Speaking of which, I need to go listen to ‘Someone Like You’…

I’m a music lover and I love every kind of music, especially obscure and personally, Adele isn’t that good of an artist. There are much better artists out there that are never recognized because they were never given the chance.

shes annoying, they overplay her, and she cant sing high. the only song i liked was rolling in the deep, and that was because they had backgroud voice effects. adele’s voice clashes with the piano in all her other songs and it makes my ears hurt
